What would you like to see in an education based OS?

I know there are education oriented OSes-- that attempt to build an educational environment One in particular is Edubuntu.

I personally don't like the Ubuntu Linux distribution-- it's great and stable, but it's rather bulky for my tastes. I think a faster, lightweight Linux distribution would be better suited for education. At this moment, Edubuntu is 2.5gb and rather large for many flash drives. I have a 2gb flash drive and I want to create a Linux distribution that will run on a lightweight live environment under 2gb. Ideally around 1gb.

I will attempt to build the OS starting from the Archlinux base install, and build up lightweight applications and working environment.

I know-- for word processing I will use Open Office. It's not very lightweight, but it has the ability to use Powerpoint and all of the MS Office formats. I will use LXDE for a Desktop Environment, and OpenBox for a Window Manager. I want to keep things lightweight and simple, so they don't have complications when running live on school PCs. I will use the packages that come with LXDE for file managing and the rest of the needed system utilities.

My question for everyone here-- what would you like to see in a free OS that is built for students and teachers?

I will include all games that are available in Edubuntu, and I plan to include many lesson plans, and materials that are available for free online. I think dictionaries would be great-- English, Korean, Japanese and Chinese dictionaries for ESL teachers in Asia.

Any other ideas-- or anything of interest to include?

Since we're in Korea, you'll have to bundle WINE or an VM program with that to run Windows. It'd be great if Hangul Office and the Ministry of Ed. software worked with just WINE.

Which Korean based software (that is not available in Linux) do you think would be needed?

I hope to avoid using any VM (like Virtual Box, or VMware) simply because they are resource hogs and I want to keep it lightweight. I will most certainly bundle Wine with the OS, and these days Wine has improved a lot. On that note, I will have to include fonts and an IME for Korean and possibly add some .dlls for Wine to better support Korean.

I have noted Wine for the bundle Very Happy

If it's not too big, I would like to include IMEs for Japanese and Chinese as well as the fonts and support. As long as the end OS is under 2gb I will be happy.

Anything else?

I have the OS built up, I finished it last night. The total size is less than 1.89 gigabytes.

I can slim it down by stripping out the video player, music player and OpenOffice and some other utilities, but I find most people will need them anyway so I will keep them in. Including those programs and their dependencies, I could slim the OS to about 1 gigabyte.

I think it would be much more intelligent to not include teaching applications and/or EFL materials in the OS package itself. Instead, I think it's better to build a teacher/student/education repository, similar to the AUR.

This would give educators and students a huge open repository to share materials. The repository enables users to take what they want rather than use what they are given on the OS.

This has some good features.

- No more stumbling around the net looking for lesson plans, power points, games, ideas, other teaching materials etc.

- An environment to make your own materials using popular tools and tools that are exclusive to Linux systems, and share them on the open repository if you wish.

- A dedicated environment for learning

Sounds awesome, I anxiously await the fruition of this OS.
