Stealing is wrong. Being held accountable for stealing is awesome!

Awesome news! |
I don't see how this is "awesome news". How many of those 5000 people can afford the amount of money they're suing for? Is one of those 5000 people the person who pirated the movie in the first place? Seems like little more than a petty cash grab by the studio. I predict ruined lives and tied up courts. |

If my friend buys a DVD and burns me a copy, is it stealing?
If I make a backup of a DVD I own, is it stealing?
If I'm a member of a DVD club where we all lend each other movies, is it stealing?
What about if I see a movie at the cinema, and then download it to watch again later? |

If you're running an unsecured network, you might consider securing the thing. |
Actually, that is not a good idea, especially if you are pirating. I believe a while back with the RIAA was suing people left and right, a woman had won her case because he was on an unprotected wireless network, and the RIAA could not prove that it was her that was downloading music illegally. |
I thought that the person whose name appears on the wifi network registration could be held accountable for any and everything that happens on said network, and this is an excellent reason for protecting wifi networks with a password. |

Thank you Mr. Debate Club.
Just remember, it's your tax dollars that uphold those courts that are going to be stuck in litigation for years over this. This lawsuit is costing you, all in the name of some already wealthy studio owners making some extra cash. Not to mention the ISPs being subpoenaed for customer's personal information and being asked to chase down some tens of thousands of IP addresses the cost of which will likely be transferred to the Internet users, innocent of piracy and not. The world's not as black and white as you paint it.
I see little good coming of this. |

NTT, in Japan, sent me a letter in the postal mail telling me to stop downloading torrents or I'd have my service cut off and possibly be prosecuted.
There was a discussion about this over at GaijinPot.com last year. Seems a lot of expats in Japan were warned about torrent downloads.
They even quoted the specific download that they caught me on, a "The Teaching Company" lecture. |

I borrow dvds from the public library and the movie studios don't make a cent from this (except from the original sale of the dvd). Not that much different from file sharing.
The studios are greedy. They make their money when their films are in the cinemas. Whatever they make in dvd sales is gravy. On top of that, they rip people off on dvd sales. They charge like $25 for a new release. Manufacturing cost is maybe 50 cents. Who's the real thief? Funny that dvd profit margins never make the news as a topic. I wonder why. |

While I haven't downloaded anything in a rather long time... Yeah, it is pretty nice.
Net Flix and similar services are pretty rocking, too, and quite affordable. I've since had no compulsion to download movies. I've got more than I can watch all ready, and for the price of a single DVD per month. |

Because it's not theft, yet despite that fact, many people have been brainwashed by corporate propaganda into believing it is.

Yes, it really is. Entertainment producers still make their profits, and a wider total audience ends up experiencing the entertainment in question. Truly a societal blessing. |

I'm curious as to how they can prove you downloaded and watched a movie if there is no record of it on your computer. Surely all the ISP can provide is that your IP address was used to download a particular torrent, but it doesn't prove that you did it, or that you even watched it.
The pages on deletion of files are pretty comprehensive and the part where they say they will do a forensic examination of your computer to find if you have deleted any illegally downloaded files suggests to me that they need the files to have a case against you. |
Not to hijack the thread, but on a related note, how private are these ISP records? Could someone looking to dig up some embarrassing dirt on a politician, for example, pay someone working at the ISP to provide them with information on what sites are being accessed from a particular address? They are not public record, like utility bills, right?? |
