Any recommendations? Looking for something beautiful, peaceful, and somewhat secluded but still with nice food options available. |

Choose a sea, first. I recommend the East Sea and hanging out in Sokcho. Samcheok is also pretty nice too. Basically out here it's all one long beach from the DMZ down to Busan. |

West coast sea is polluted, murky puke green, and downright stinky. I would imagine the East coast to be considerably better such as being more clear, fresh, and blue. |

i second samcheok. really nice. i guess you cant go wrong with the east sea.
wouldnt recomment busan for beaches.. obviously.
but could imagine that the east as well as the west coast beaches will be crowded with the rising temperatures.
oh, one word on the food..
eventhough you are going to the beach and the ocean is right at your feet, dont think seafood will be cheap there.
i went to samcheok about 4 weeks ago and seafood there is rediculously expensive. its much cheaper in seoul.
but the kimbab cheonkuk has the same prices ^&^ |

Your loss. Haeundae and Gwangalli beaches are gorgeous, and still not crowded right now. Even better is Songjeong Beach, about a ten minute cab ride from Jangsan Station (last stop on the green line) is a fantastic beach with nice restaurants along it. There's even Thai and Mexican food available. Minbak rooms go for around 25,000 a night.
Probably still not worth it for a weekend trip from Seoul, however, when you have the beaches of idyllic Deokjeokdo just a 40 minute ferry ride off the coast of Incheon. |

Gangneung is the original East Sea getaway, and it has some attractive things smaller beach towns don't have. |

If you've got a rental car or transport head down to Geoje, get a tourist map when you first get on the island and go from there.
There are a variety of different beaches so just go exploring and they're not crowded yet, only really teachers and Engineers here now.
Plus the food on the Island is awesome
There's no doubt i'm biased though.... |

Yeah, I've been to both the beaches along the western coast and along the Sea of Japan (I refuse to call it the other name), and the latter is much better. It's not even close. |

Such as the Thomas Edison museum, for example. |

Jomiro is right. The restaurants on sea fronts are pricey, but not fancy enough to warrant those prices. 40K to 100K is standard per person for whatever it is you get. Seafood is expensive and about all that is served in oceans view.
I'd recommend grabbing gimbap or sandwiches, beer, and water in town before heading out to a beach. |

Keep in mind that beach season for most Koreans is from July 1st until August 31st. For some reason, Koreans generally don't go to the beach outside of these days and beaches are much less busy, especially Haeundae. |

I used to live in Geoje Island and enjoyed the beaches there. Kujora beach is pretty popular with expats that live there (not teachers mind).....and not as overcrowded as Haeundae obviously. |

Most Korean employers won't give their workers vacations until that time. |

Ha ha, I have no idea about that one or if you are joking.
I mean the beach and lake area are set up quite well for tourism. |

The East coast is much nicer in terms of water quality, but if you're just looking for a weekend getaway from Seoul, I would recommend one of the islands off of Incheon.
Do a search for thread on this forum about these islands. Although the water isn't as clean, I do recommend Muuido, for example. A really long beach, good seafood restaurants, and when I was there last summer, they even had camping. To get to Muuido, there is a local bus from Incheon airport. The bus takes you to a dock where you catch a 5 minute ferry (not sure why they haven't built a bridge cuz the distance is so short, but it adds to the ambiance).
If you need more info, you can always call the tourism hotline, 1330. |
