I understand the economy is bad, but why should the government pay that long for people not to work? There is ALWAYS a job available somewhere- what makes these people so special that they shouldn't have to settle for something less that what they are qualified for? Qualification does not entitle anybody to anything! So too many people out there want to be designers? Perhaps if you just can't get a job in your field of study, then you should think about looking into something else. Or at least take some "menial" job to get you through while you search for something else, rather than taking government money for two years.
Am I wrong? I mean I could see maybe four months as a nice safety net. Maybe six months. But two years? |

It really seems like they always find a lot of a-holes to interview for these sorts of articles.
"My dating life really took a hit."
"Brodeur said she has quietly started looking for jobs in the restaurant industry. Before going into office work, she worked as a waitress while raising her three kids, and she also briefly owned a restaurant.
But her husband has said that she is too old, and has come too far, for that kind of physically demanding and often low-paying work.
He said, I will lose respect for you if you do it, she said." |

Did you try reading the whole article?
There are a number of factors listed in the article, theres also the fact that some people are unable to move, can not aford it etc.
I am sure these people really want to have been fired/laid off from their jobs, lose their houses, go into debt that will take them years to getout of, but hey, you got it all figured out.
Then when most of them are UNABLE to get jobs in their field because they are too old, or lots of other companies are in the same boat, you'd have them suck up a 7 dollar an hour job at McDonalds that would prevent them from getting to the Job interviews they need to survive?
Sorry, but if the market economy (that the Government helps to perpetuate and allows companies to send the jobs to other countries) suddenly renders me obsolete or redundant so that they can get thier sharholders another billion dollars this quarter, I am gonna stay at home trying to find a job I am qualified for at all costs.
As for "there is always a job somewhere" yeah that may be true, hard to get those jobs when you are broke and can't reach it though, or because you can't make an interview because your bos at Mcdonalds needs you to drop those fries.
They are not taking your hard earned tax dollars either, the government does that, some of these people are just holding out as long as they can since corpations backs and supported by the government robbed them of their hard earned paychecks.
Now of course there are some deadbeats out there, but many of the unemployed attempt to get jobs, and want jobs. There is a low percentge of those that habitually take advantage. |

What are you talking about here, factory workers? Call center operators? Other jobs that can be sent abroad? Yeah, that sucks. What percentage of people receiving welfare are in a situation like that I don't pretend to know. And my problem is not with those people. It is with people like those in the article- perhaps it resonated with me because I know a number of people like that back home. People who went to school for a job that there is not enough demand for. If everybody wants to be a model, and there are too many people trying to get each job, eventually a lot of those people are going to have to find something else to do. Same with these "high-level managers" and designers.
I just don't like the sense of entitlement. It pisses me off when people think they are too good for something, when really the only reason they are too good for it is that they are allowed to continue not working and "searching" for a job through an overly-indulgent safety net. Maybe that is the feeling that the author of the article is slyly trying to evoke by interviewing all these numbskulls but I doubt it. Nobody is too good for anything. I am not against a safety net, but I am against using it as a tool to keep the upper class up. |

So the rich are allowed their sense of entitlement at the middle class and lower classes expense, but you think that a person MUST suck up a pathetic minimum wage job, one that will limit or hinder thier ability to actually find a job they can live off of.
So you have no issue with the rich creating the social conditions that drive up unemployment and social program costs, but you are gonna criticise the guy who while trying to find a replacment career chooses not to take a job working at Burger KIng or cleaning toilets?
That takes balls man.
As I said, many people don't want to be on the dole, but better on the dole trying your best to get a job you can support yourself on than to degrade yourself by working at one of these crap jobs ( where many jobs STILL can't be had since they are going to illegal immigrants) that do NOTHING to get you out of the financial problems and is no more of a benefit than the minimum wage (or low paying job) they refuse to do.
If someone can prove they are trying to get another equivalent job they should be able to stay on the dole for as long as they need. Maybe then the goverment would actually think about regulating the worlds worse economic system, which they will NEVER do so long as the corporations own them, and the payouts are far less than the profits. |

Lot's of rhetoric. No real understanding of how a market economy works.
In NZ there are second and third generation beneficiaries. A whole underclass who haven't done a days work in GENERATIONS. |

No Iunderstand how a market Economy works, I also understand that it basically degrades society, puts the power into the hands of an elite few who control all the wealth, we are at the whims of their decisions and the government has little to no power to do anything about it as they are bought and paid for by these corporations.
Basically every major issue that is detremental to the globe can be linked to market economies. Pollution, Global Warming, many of the wars (including Bush's Iraq war Part Deux) Poverty, Unemployment, African Aids Outbreaks.
But of course no one is going to give a crap til 50 - 100 years from now when the ozone layer is depleted, the polar ice caps are all but gone, our weather patterns are screwed, theres no more oil, our air is toxic etc, then maybe they will all of a sudden slap thier heads and go "ok maybe rampant and uncontrolled capitalism was not the greatest idea"
BUt by then there will be very little to do but ride it out.
Capitalism is the worst economic system ever enacted as it basically rewards the greedy, the selfish and the repugnant criminals whil hard working average joes are at the mercy of the system.
I know HOW a market economy works, I just wish the governments of the world would wake up and figure out that virtually every major problem is caused by it, and that we can not cntinue on this path forever. |

Wow, this article isn't even talking about welfare. It's talking about unemployment insurance. You know, that deduction that comes out of your paycheck in case you get laid off. Now there have been a lot of extensions to keep people getting some amount of income (I think it's what, 25% of your former salary?)
Your unemployment check is related to your income at your job. If you made $50,000 a year, you get more than someone who made $30,000 a year.
If you did not work, you cannot collect unemployment insurance. For example, I can't quit/lose my job in Korea and go back to the states and collect for 99 weeks/indefinitely like some Europeans can.
True "welfare" (2nd and 3rd generation recipients like Senior brought up) is really hard to get and it doesn't last for 99 weeks. That crap died in the 90s, so go get a time machine and celebrate. |

Geez, nukeday, way to ruin a perfectly good opportunity for conservatives to complain about the welfare state and for liberals to complain about class strife. Why don't you go pee in someone's cheerios? |

I'm probably not going to bother getting into this. Cite a source and I might consider it. But basically your whole paragraph is 200 words of stream of conscience rant. Even the biggest lefties in the Off Topic and CE topic don't buy your first year at Uni poli sci crap. |

The article is about the states, and the examples cited are a guy in his 30s and a woman in her 50s. Likely they have both worked at their prior jobs for 10-20 years and deserve some kind of compensation considering they paid their unemployment insurance for those periods. Now, 99 weeks as a max (if you worked part time for 2 years, you definitely aren't getting benefits for that long - you might get a few hundred dollars for a few months) is likely due to the current economic crisis. Remember the news about how Congress kept passing extension bills?. I think we can all agree that it's not a sign of corrupt socialism. It's the USA, FFS, the wealthiest western nation with the weakest social safety net. Nor is it a total, complete failure of the market economy (might be yet to come - don't be overconfident - but no need to cite a bunch of simplistic Marx-Engels Cliff Notes either.).
And, as I said,
"If you did not work, you cannot collect unemployment insurance. For example, I can't quit/lose my job in Korea and go back to the states and collect for 99 weeks/indefinitely like some Europeans can. "
The point is, the topic is not welfare (that dirty, yet VERY specific, word), it's unemployment benefits. Did it invoke much pity in me considering the people they interviewed consider themselves "above" restaurant work? No, not really, since in the case of welfare(TRUE welfare) recipients they are required to take ANY work that is offered to them or lose their benefits. Unemployment insurance recipients don't have that requirement, and I won't be listening to any Ayn Rand Jrs. who insist they should.
If you wanna talk welfare, like I said, shift the topic away from the States or get a time machine. Or you could read the article instead of engaging in a two-extremist grandstand - that's what the CE is for. Offtopic has a modicum of self respect, consarnit. |

Corn right? (And other crops such as soy, sugar, grain etc)
Who subsidizes corn production? The market?
This topic has been raked over the coals ad infinitum over the last three or so years. It is corporatism not capitalism that is at work here. |
