1 Get the best attitude - an empathic, informative attitude.

2 Find a quiet place to initiate the discussion.

3 Use neutral, impersonal language that refers to professionalism and the impact on the office.

4 Say something like, "I have noticed the smell of (the offensive odor), and Im concerned that it is having an impact on your ability to interact with your co-workers and students."

5 Let them know you are pointing it out to be helpful. Use the Power Phrase, "Im telling you because its important for you to know."

6 Set up a follow-up discussion.

7 Let them know how they're doing.

I have a better idea.

YOU: You smell bad.
HIM: WTF?!
YOU: It's true. More deodorant would do the trick.
HIM: F U !
YOU: Whatever.

Guaranteed the next day he smells better.

Seriously, we're adults. If someone smells, tell them. You're doing them a favor. They may not see it that way at first, but how can they not recognize the social benefits of smelling good?

Or the passive-aggressive method:

Leave a bar of soap on his desk.
Next week if there is no improvement, some knock-off cologne

The soap on his desk idea is a good one.

Another one would be say "phhhhwwwoaaaarrrrr! WTF is that smell?!"

Say out loud "Is that me?" Then smell your own armpits.

"It's not me. I wonder who in the office smells so bad"

You are not accusing him directly but giving a very strong hint.

Anyway I don't why some foreigners cant even get basic hygeine right.

Go for a few/several/too many beers together, and you can put it down to drunken bonding shenanigans and witty bar-room banter when you drop the bombshell.
There's no easy way to do it, so you might as well lighten the mood.

Do they sell foot powder, cream, or spray thereabouts? You might also consider changing the style of socks you wear -- I had similar issues from working in heavy work boots in the heat and switched to thinner dress-style socks, some of which are treated to wick moisture more efficiently. Odor-Eaters powder is also good if applied lightly every few hours or as needed.

Worse comes to worst, buy a pair of sneakers that fasten by velcro and take your shoes off throughout the day to give them some air. I have a pair by Propet that are both very comfortable and quite well ventilated.

Hope that helps. Better socks made the biggest difference for me. Cotton socks are no good.

Sound advice. Some people's feet may feel hotter in non-cotton or cotton rich socks. Thin cotton socks keep me cool, thick enough to wick away moisture.

A thin underwear Tshirt helps under the arms.

Like suggested above, change style of shoue in the summer. Something not so enclosing and hot on the foot. Perhaps a mesh shoe, with low back or sides?

If wearing sandals, always wear socks. Don't get fabric sandals as they will soak in the sweat.

You could maybe say to the colleague, "The students noses are closer to your feet than your nose, and they don't like the smell. Are your shoes smelling of anything?"

Well, I guess you could get a thick crayon and write in a childish way a message to leave on his desk: You smell! But real stinkers would just ignore it if they think it's from a child.

Another angle, but one that requires a bit of deception, might go like this:

YOU: Couple of years ago, the principal called me to his office and told me that a few students and teachers were complaining about my body odor. I was really upset, let me tell you. I wanted to tell the prince where to shove it. Anyways, sorry about this but a bunch of students and teachers are telling me the same thing about you. Just to let you know before students start complaining too much. I know it sucks, but that's part of living in another country. Blah, blah, blah.

If you say it happened to you, it seems to take out the bite--"I was the stinkiest teacher in teachers college, let me tell ya!" It'll still upset the stinky fella, but it probably will get results and avoid the silent treatment. If that matters.

Thanks for the advice. Very Happy Sorry OP for taking over your thread for a bit.

As for the original question, I think I would maybe try bringing up the topic of how hard it is to find deoderant here....maybe find out if the NET knows where to find it, and if so, maybe you can go on a shopping trip together to get some. Laughing I know... that would greatly depend on how much you'd want to spend time with this person, but.. yeah, if it's BO, I'd probably ensure that they are aware that there is help for the problem.

No worries, if this thread can help just one stinky co-worker, than it's all been worth it.

I am not social with this person, so I cannot/will not do it over a beer. I am giving all your suggestions to my wranglers and letting them figure it out.

As for stinky feet, my 1000won socks are starting to feel like saunas, I need to find some of those hi-tech suckas so I won't be having a thread about stinky feet teacher started by stinky body teacher.

I think this is nice. It would be more my style.

Anyways, good luck!

True story here: There was a smelly girl at the hagwon I worked at a couple of years ago. Nearly 80% of her students ended up leaving the school within the first 4 months of her being their teacher. The admin of the school told her why her students left (according to parents) and gave her an ultimatum to clean up or she would be gone soon. They gave her ample time, and needless to say that she was canned 2 months later. Some people just don't get it.
