There's already a sex offender registry. Now in California, animal abusers may be required to register. People can find out if an animal abuser is living in their community.
Expose animal abusers:

They might just break into your backyard and abuse your dog. Or sneak into your house and abuse your guinea pig. They just can't help themselves. |

I'm all for much tougher sentencing for animal abusers; I think it's ridiculous that someone can be proven to have beaten and tortured an animal and then receive fewer than a couple months in jail and/or a paltry fine. However, this registry is just plain stupid. The only way this would make sense is if, as Nova sarcastically alluded to, the only people forced to register were those found to be serially abusing their neighbors' pets. |

I agree that there should be tougher penalties for extreme cases of animal abuse such as gelding a goat. The registry thing is rediculous though, it just opens the door to having a register for all kinds of crimes. |

Animal abuse is the one thing that gets under my skin. Its disgusting and I wish there were tougher laws for the wack jobs that commit these crimes. |

This whole registry idea needs to end. If someone is no longer a threat, then they should be able to live their life in peace without constant harassment and public humiliation by the government. If someone remains a threat, then they shouldn't be on the street at all. |

Is this just to restrict abusers from owning new animals, or does it have a different purpose? |

First they came after those who were claimed to have abused animals.
I said nothing.
Then they came after those that abused cars.
I said nothing.
Then they came after those that abuse toaster ovens.
I said nothing.
Then they came after me, no one said anything. |

Both of you are ignoring the fact that they began with a sex offender registry. Why did you not speak up then? |
