We have a Star Trek thread out there, figured that a Star Wars thread was appropriate.
Now I will save my general hatred of George Lucas rant, and just say that I have never seen the draw of the Star wars movies. Yeah okay the special effects were cool for the day, but the acting is worse that a high school play, the dialogue is cheesy, the ideologies that they glorify is insulting (slavery, servitude, racism etc) and this is at the hands of the GOOD guys, not the empire.
And then lets not even get started on the crap that was the last 3 films.
Anyway, I welcome comments from the lovers as well, just remember I am not insane for disliking them, you are not insane for liking them. God knows I have liked terrible films from time to time ( I am shamed to admit that I enjoy watching Battlefield Earth, and Howard the Duck, despite them being terrible films)
I guess some people have the same love ( misguided as it is) for Star wars |

Most Asians don't like Star Wars.
I've often wondered why it didn't catch on around here but Harry Potter was like wildfire. *shrug* |

I'm a Star Wars nut but I have to agree with the Trekkies out there that the last 3 films were absolute GARBAGE and should never have been created. It RUINED my childhood experience with Star Wars. I can't believe George Lucas created those pathetic excuses for movies. |

You take that back about Howard the Duck!!!!
That was one of my favorite childhood movies, along with Beastmaster and Swamp Thing.
Sorry. Off-topic, continue. |

As someone who is a Trekker, I also had a big Star Wars phase- (Books, Comics, etc.)
The difference is that Star Trek has endurance. Star Wars is great fun, but there is no depth to it. Sorry, but Yoda's big speeches pale in comparison to a simple comment issued by Data or Picard.
Back home I had about as many Star Wars books as Star Trek books. But the Star Wars ones had been gathering dust for a while. Now on my computer I have every episode of TNG and DS9, but none of the Star Wars films. |

the original star wars films were absolute classics that hold a lot of nostalgia. the new ones? nope.
as for the expanded universe..the old republic has a deep storyline
however, star trek? there's just so much of that crap that to me it just comes off as a soap opera for nerds. enjoy your general hospital!!! |

Strangely enough, my son is right now working on a linguistics paper dealing with Star Wars (It's for a statistical linguistics class and he's using corpus software and analyzing the scripts).
The original three movies (ANH, ESB, ROTJ) were really good movies, while the prequels were not so good. As mentioned above, the expanded universe books are very interesting and really do a lot of character development and have good plots and storylines. I really liked the Darth Bane story--the Sith are just misunderstood...
As for Star Trek, I've been watching that series since the original series in the 60s. Both SW and ST have their good and not so good points. |

This is absolute required viewing for this discussion, and one of the best series of videos ever made on youtube. It's long, but I guarantee you won't stop watching once you start. There's also another one just recently released for Attack of the Clones. |

The misogynistic excesses were too twisted, pissed me off. The basement scene and "You know what to do" pizza pocket are terribly irresponsible laugh fodder for the worst sort of folk on the Internet.
He went too far. The irony is: he, like Lucas, lacked others courageous enough to step up and say his idea sucks. |

Star Wars was good for it's time, but the 1970's and 80's were a very different time. Even the 90's weren't so dirty as now with the blatant cussing, sex, open gay stuff, and illegal drugs now commonly seen in movies and even more so in TV shows. Star Wars does look lame to those not accustomed to the puritanical style family entertainment America used to exclusively produce. We aren't so conservative and image conscious anymore. Any thing goes and the more down and dirty, the more the audience thinks a movie is less lame. Avatar was fairly clean, but it only worked for it's innovative breakthrough 3D graphics; not the scif-fi story itself. Even Star Trek Voyager in the 90's was very clean classic style compared to what is coming out now. The HD generation is spoiled and so am I. Problem with the HD gen is it's still too expensive to produce so very little quality material is coming out now. Don't expect any great Star Wars, Star Trek, and other new sci-fi movies to be hitting the theaters any time soon. |

The original three were a childhood indulgence that will always have a special place in my heart. Even if the acting was spotty at best, at least the writing was halfway decent and they made you care about the characters.
The three prequels are complete garbage lacking any kind of emotional impact or coherent story for that matter. Best ignored.
For anyone interested, Timothy Zahn's trilogy that continues of the series is worthy of a read, and quite possibly better written than any of the movies. ("Heir to the Empire", "Dark Force Rising" and "The Last Command".) His treatment of the Star Wars mythos is far more engaging than anything Lucas has come up with. |
