I think it's closer to 7. A standard drink is 10 mls of pure alcohol, there are 72 mls in a 360ml bottle of 20%. A bottle of soj is about the same as 600 mls of wine. Though actually a standard drink varies widely between countries>

well, a 330 ml beer is 1 unit at ~5% alcohol, right?
a bottle of soju is 350 ml at 20% alcohol.
I'd say it's a bit over 4 units.
But Gaber's probably right. I don't really agree with the whole 1 beer = 1 glass of wine = 1 shot. A bit too simplistic, I guess. |

I've heard 7 units too.
50ml of soju constitutes about 1 unit.
Most doctors recommend no more than 4 units per day.......about 3/4 of a bottle of soju.
So doctors would say less than 5 bottles of the Korean Electric Water per week.
Huh......like I've ever done what the doctor told me...... |

Stella is usually 5.1%abv so what you do is times 330 by 5.1 by 0.001 and that's your answer which equals 1.683 units of alcohol in one bottle of Stella with an abv of 5.1%. Just found this
So Soju = 330 x 20 x 0.001 = 6.6 Units. That sounds about right. Bearing in mind its half the strength of vodka. |

I guess I'm getting "units of alcohol" confused with "standard" drinks when they talk about how many drinks you can have without having an illegal BAC. I'd generally equate a bottle of beer with a shot of vodka, but not a shot of soju.
So, yeah...a bottle of soju, about 4 beers. I guess I drink too much. |

Standard unit does vary but generally most people think of it as 14g of pure ethanol. http://pubs.niaaa.nih.gov/publications/practitioner/pocketguide/pocket_guide2.htm (Australia and NZ define it about the same if I remember right when I was there.)
The simplest way to figure this is 50ml (1.5 oz shot) of 80 proof liquor is one standard. Soju is 1/2 that strength (okay it varies 16 - 25 % but I'm going middle of the road here). A 350 ml bottle has 7 shots in it. Each shot = 1/2 of a real shot. So 3.5 |

it's my understanding soju has formaldehyde in it - what percent, I don't know, but can explain why people get so stupid (and sick) after drinking it. |

I'm pretty sure this is impossible to know, as they don't really release the ingredients.
Why won't some one release a "Premium" soju made from real ingredients, and sell it for 6000won instead of 3000?. I order Andong soju(10,000 won) when I can because it tastes better. I have no idea if the ingredients are any better. |
