I've just taken the plunge and installed the new Ubuntu 10.04 on my machine. I was running Windows 7 previously but decided I wanted a bit of a change.
My first impressions are very positive. This is the first time I have used a Linux distro and I expected it to be a pain in the ass to get working but it was incredibly easy. Everything worked perfectly 'out of the box'. I was amazed that not only did it recognize my ipod touch but also allows me to sync music and video just like itunes.
If anyone is thinking of giving Linux a shot i highly recommend this new release |

I installed Ubuntu using the wubi setup and it was easy. So far, it seems like the most complete version yet. I've been dabbling with Linux for the last couple of years, but I always get frustrated by how steep the learning curve is. Ubuntu is clearly made for people like me, who don't want to start entering script into a terminal just to get something working.
However, it was still a major hassle getting my printer up and running. It seems that there are simply no existing proprietary drivers that work. Eventually I found a commercial 3rd party app via P2P that has drivers for various printers. Usually this software is $30, but I didn't want to pay for something that is free on any other OS. |
