I was wondering how the currency exchange places in Itaewon compare with the banks for exchanging money? My concern was the currency places are more open and less security. There is also a chance of getting at least one counterfeir bill. What is your opinion? |

I got taken last time I was here using the banks. I actually found the Itaewon money changers a better deal. |

Agreed. The non-bank money changers in Itaewon are a better deal. They're regulated so you needn't worry about getting cheated. |

I know the money changers are a better deal, but what I am concerned with is that I am in a walk up area with someone next to me. Mainly security concern. I may get counterfeit bills quicker with the money changers than the banks and the amount I will be changing will be about 5 million won to USD. |

With only 5 million won worth of USD, the thief will just pass you over for the next customer.
If you're that worried about the thief and counterfeit, go the bank. Problem solved.
.
By the way, you sound a lot like fromtheuk...are you his sock? |

For $5000 Why not just go to the bank, get a CASHIERS CHECK / MONEY ORDER (drawn on a US bank) and make it payable to you. (pay to the order of hochhasd).
When you get home, deposit it into your bank account. It should clear in about a week (maybe 10 days if you have to open a new account) and save yourself a whole lot of hassle over a couple of dollars.

Ok! You are saying it is safe, but what are the odds of getting a counterfeit bill(s) from the money changers versus the banks? |

I never heard of them being regulated. I thought the banks are regulated? So no problem about getting a counterfeit? |
