What results are you hoping for in regards to S. Korea this WC?
I hope they win the whole thing!

I hope they make it past group play, but I'm not cheering for them to win the whole thing.

I hope they lose every match they play.

I don't care too much, as long as they lose at least one match on a "controversial" call. The Korean netizens are much more entertaining than their soccer team.

Nigeria will outmuscle Korea, and look to impose their physical superiority. I wonder how Korea has fared against African teams in the past?
Even if this current Nigerian side isn't as good as years gone by, the still have a lot of players playing in European teams. I can't see them losing to Korea, unless Korea suddenly improve 110%

I'm not a soccer fan, so I can't add anything to the talk of Korea's chances to advance, but I've read several "experts" who seem to think they have quite a good chance to place second in their group.

Also, how about North Korea. Tough group, if not the toughest. Anyone think we could be in for an upset? World cups tend to have a lot of surprises, and NK might be the beneficiary of one.

That or the biggest thrashing in world cup history. Difficult one to call.

btw, those of you familiar with Korean soccer, I keep seeing this display at Emart and I'm not sure what it's about. Could anyone here explain it for me?

It could happen like outlines above...or it could work out like this:

Korea 1 Greece 0
Argentina 3 Nigeria 1

Argentina 3 Korea 0
Nigeria 1 Greece 1

Korea 1 Nigeria 1
Argentina 1 Greece 1

Argentina 7
Korea 4
Greece 2
Nigeria2

Heck it could work out any number of ways. Why the final draw between Argentina and Greece? Argentina will have nothing to play for beyond placement in the final 16 and Greece would be in a do or die spot.

I think the key match for Korea is the one this Saturday vs Greece. If they fail to get at least a point, they are toast. In fact, in my opinion, if they do not get a win and 3 points, they will be in a very tenous position to get out of the group.

As for the loss to Spain...what then do you make of France losing 1-0 to China this weekend in a warm up match?

Warm ups are not that meaningful...hence the term friendly warm up matches. Wink

I found these pictures of North Korea arriving in South Africa for the WC (note the heavy security, apparently they had the most security out of all the teams):

Interesting. Scroll down to France vs Korea. Apparently, at the 33 minute mark, France had a good goal disallowed. The people of the Han have never mentioned this but also never stopped talking about the Swiss goal.

Scroll down and you will notice that the cornerkick the disallowed goal was scored off of was a direct result of a missed call by the linesman. It should hve been a goalkick since the French player last touched the ball. It is called a make-up call. If the refs feel they missed a call that leads to a goal that is in any way questionable, they will disallow the goal.

Bohol, I bet you did not even read the whole section before you rushed back to Dave's to post something ripping Koreans. You probably had that pathetic, "people of the Han" comment in your head all day and were desperately trying to find a way to use it.

By the way, most Korean soccer fans I know never had an issue with the call once it was pointed out that ball touched the Korean defender.

It needed to be pointed out?

Make up calls are generally not that egregious. In my experience they normally take the form of a soft penalty for a soft penalty. There is no way a goal should be disallowed because a corner was soft. After 2002, Korea have used up all the odd refereeing decisions it ever deserves.

Interesting poll. 30% are rooting for Korea to fail. Personally, I'm not hoping they fail but if they do, then I will enjoy giving some stick to the fans. If you can't have the banter, then what's the point?

I'd be careful with the banter. Koreans don't get that sort of humor, at all.
During the last World Cup, some hagwon students asked me who was going to win: Switzerland or Korea? I, naievly, said: "Switzerland, because I used to have a beautiful blonde Swiss girl friend." Wow. The kids cancelled the class and didn't come back to the hagwon for 6 months!

Hahaha that's amazing! Seriously though, you must be careful of the funny comments regarding Korea. I told my class yesterday Korea is only "so-so" and they all refused to speak to me for the rest of the day.... they would have rather me said that Korea is going to win it, they are the best side (and lied to them in the process) than tell them the truth.... that Korea is an average side at best, and have their work cut out for them to reach the next round.

Screw that nationalistic BS. I'm going to rib them as much as I would any other rival fans. Conversely, if England lose to the USA, I fully expect to be on the end of some grief! Very Happy

The current squad is more similar to the 2006 squad in terms of talent than the 2002 squad. They also play somewhat slower these days. Hiddink's squad had speed from top to bottom.

Endurance won't be a problem, but playing against bigger opponents who like to throw their weight, Korea will suffer. They were actually losing to Togo and only managed to come back into the match when the Togolese player was red carded. Against France they conceded way too much possession, and against Switzerland they lacked any kind of speed to really trouble the Swiss.

They've never been able to replace Hong Myung Bo and Seol Ki Yeon, and right now they're fielding a patchwork team. Any win will be considered a success at this point.

And as far as ribbing Koreans about their team, why bother? If the team sucks, then that will have been insult enough. God knows their pink uniforms were open invitations to rib.

2-1 Greece.
