Is it a new requirement that EPIK requires criminal background checks from every state you have lived in?

I don't know if it is new, but it is definitely the current policy. They made me send out two, but only one had to be apostilled (the state I'm currently living in).

I've heard this. I went to college in NY and have an address in Florida...whats worse, for people already in Korea, they are requiring Korean CRC's on top of that. I'm sure hogwons will and all E-2 jobs will catch up to this eventually.

INCREMENTALISM.

That's how tyranny works...

I'm so done with public schools anyway, but if it's going to be like this with every job soon and the exchange rate doesn't go down while the market continues to flood, I'm outta here..

are you teaching at a hagwon now?

i got fingerprinted when i was under 21 for drinking in college and now it is stuck on my california record forever. it just says detention. so i guess epik definitely will be out for me even after i did all the required paperwork and had an interview set up.

is it worth trying for a hagwon now?

You're going to be working with children and your employer is seeking a criminal background check. What's the problem, inconvenience and red tape aside?

Thanks Rollo. Glad to know I'm not the only one who gets the big picture.

What's next? Random apt raids for foreigners to make sure they have no drugs on them? Random HIV tests every time you come back from Thailand? Not a lot of freedom in this modern world of ours. Just my 2 cents.

Why should someone have to do this every time they start a new job in Korea, over and over again?

And look how things are with letters of rec these days as well. If they're not done in a certain way, they're just not accepted.

Fact is, if tons of people weren't coming here, Korea couldn't get away with all this.

THEY CAME FIRST for the CRCs,
and I didn't speak up because I had a clean criminal record.

THEN THEY CAME for the Medical Exam,
and I didn't speak up because I didn't take illegal drugs.

THEN THEY CAME for the Security Deposit,
and I didn't speak up because I didn't plan on wrecking the gaff.

THEN THEY CAME for me
and by that time no one was left to speak up... because evidently all my friends were junkie ex-cons who broke the air con.

You're right. This is the road to hell Wink

Hey there...I posted the official EPIK guidelines for criminal background checks on that thread, so if you read through it you will know exactly what you need to do. Good luck!

Yeah its facist to require standardized presentation for reference letters!!

Checking for CRIMINAL offenses BEFORE giving someone a teaching job? Tyranny!!!!!!

You need your head examined bckinseoul...also rollo was making fun of your tyranny-facism comments...too bad you did not get that.

My response to rollo was sarcasm.

Korea in 2010 vs. Korea in 2005: there's simply no comparison. Take a look around at the flooded market, the brink of war, the lousy on and off exchange rate, all the paperwork and hassle for a visa, all this PT work for 25 an hour on worknplay.co.kr, stagnant wages, unresponsive recruiters holding out for people fresh out of college and women, and college jobs in the country that want masters degrees.

Sorry, this place isn't what it used to be.

Guess I should have been more clear from the get-go...

(I know I'm starting to wish I made better decisions in school years ago. Anyone else?)

I arrived in 1997.
Won crashed, IMF, Teacher exodus...same comments you are making now were made.

Lo and behond, 2 years later wages were higher and the exchange rate better...how amazing that is... Wink

For the past year and a half the market has been flooded with applicants due to the bad US economy...this too will change at some point.
