I have three co-teachers I work with:
Number One: Fantastic! The kids respect her therefore behaviour is well controlled. Her english level is very good and their english level reflects this. She is 100% supportive in my lessons - I mess around on the board or whatever and when the kids start squeaking WHAT? she steps in - no problems there.
Number Two: Average. Mid range interest in my classes, sometimes prefers to sleep but sometimes helps me out. Class discipline is bearable. English distinctly average.
Number Three: Awful. About as helpful as a chocolate teapot. She seems to think my class is a free period and communicates this to me by either a)curling up in the corner with her head buried in her arms without looking up once for 45mins or b)just leaving the room altogether and having a kip in the staff room. She intentionally ignores me in class, dosen't understand anything I say and plays with her phone too much.
Yes, Number 3 isn't my favourite. My point is that she only has to put up with me once a day, and i've come a long way to teach these brats. I would have thought just a little part of her thinks 'well, he is a native speaker, best help him out so the kids might actually learn some english...........'. I try not to 'step on their toes' during lessons but I think 2 and 3 resent me! Tough!
Tell me you have some evil co-teachers PLEASE!!!!! |

I'm going with a little bit of column A and a little bit of column B.
Just remember that they go through a lot more than yourself however the excuse for Number 3's behaviour is shocking. just take her phone off her and tell her that she had better study as well. Maybe she needs to learn again .
You'll find a lot of Number 2's so if they are like that than I can hack it. The occasional number one will stick out as well.
It comes down to 3 main factors
1. How good their English is(obviously)
2. How new they are(if they have been in the same hagwon 4 years i can tell you they are bored - hence they have seen so many foreigners come and og they no longer care)
3, Their personality (some poeple are just naturally happy while others are the opposite).
Have fun |

You wanna turn this into a slag thread and thereby do a diservice to number 1? You just wanna hear about the evil ones to satisfy your own twisted heart and turn this into another Korean bashing thread that damns your "good" co-worker by association? How nice of you. |

After 2 years in a hagwan with no co-teachers followed by one year in an elementary school with disinterested co-teachers and then only for 10% of the time I have finally hit the jackpot.
I'm now in a girls middle school and have co-teachers all the time and they are great. I feel like I've died and gone to heaven. Sometimes I worry that it's all a dream and I'll wake up and find it's a figment of my imagination.
Please don't anyone wake me up ......... I'm having too much fun now. |

heh heh..good post..
In my experience korean co-teachers are starkly divided between the goodies and baddies, in all their extrmes, not much grey area to play with. you either have wonderful sympathetic conscientious (often) born again christians, who are great but a little boring on a personal level, conversation wise.
And then you have the other spectrum of degenerate misfits- the waeguk hater who won't spek a word to you unless cornered, because she hates earning less than you. There's also the saboteur, who will try to make you look bad to better her own job security.. then there are the downright lazy, hopeless princesses, the hitleresque dictators in positions of power, who are also usually clueless about what teaching actually involves... some of them are incredibly small minded, petty creatures.... |

Sometimes prefers to sleep in class is "average"?
You're probably lucky to have co-teachers in your classroom to help with discipline at all, but I'd have a little talk with 2 & 3, and if that doesn't help blow both in to the boss if I were you for not doing their jobs. |

Oh come on, don't lets condemn the OP as some sort of racist or whatever. He speaks the truth,...lets just get real for once on here. Some Korean co-workers are a joke...I mean its actually funny to laugh at it once you're out of the office. of course their are exceptional ones, and most are good. But the bad ones make for a funny topic here. |

At my first job i had the shadow to deal with, or maybe lets call her the poisoned ice queen. After ten months of work, I believe she actually said more than 1 word to me on my last day, after all my attempts to be warm and friendly...I mean, someone you work with who refuses to speak to you for ten months is not only tragic, but sort of ridiculous to the point of being hilarious. Some of these girls are seriously disturbed. |

Yeah thanks rapier - I'm not trying to create a waygook revolution - just wanted to know if some people were left as speechless as I was by CERTAIN teachers professional ineptitude. If I have to reiterate then No1 is an exeptional teacher and a credit to the Hogwan OK!
The other two are useless. |

What number are you? I suspect most foreign teachers would rate a 2 or 3. |

Agreed.
However you would then also have to agree than some western teachers here are a joke as well. |
