So my boss gives me this paper that says it is mandatory that I go to this event, as well as any person who teaches in Seoul. Is every teacher in Seoul that is working legally really going to be there? And what happens if I dont go? There are receipts my boss said I need to get stamped and show him.

Mor info here www.kafla.or.kr

thanks

isn't kafla that group that keeps an illegal(?) blacklist of certain foreign teachers, complete with their passport numbers? i believe this is that group that tries to regulate and communicate information about foreign teachers at or applying to hagwons. it sounds like your boss is a part of this group.

i legally work in seoul (public school) and definitely will not be attending. by the way, it's on a saturday.

interesting. So what would be the point of me going? Are they going to try and get me to give information about illegal teachers?

The group has a nasty past.

On the website the pop up has more information, in Korean. Clicking the left tab on the pop up will allow you to download a .hwp file with more information in English. The session, according to the file, is about immigration regulations.

I left the punctuation and formatting as it is in the HWP file Smee mentioned.

IIRC from my haweon contract a few years ago, there was a requirement to attend a monthly training session, if held, and that session would be on a Saturday. This training session doesn't seem to be so bad. Actually, it has a lot of potential to empower the employees with actual information instead of the oft-mentioned "I know someone at Immigration who says this is okay." Another plus is the chance to win a netbook or I-pad.

Addendum: On the link Smee mentioned, the button (tab) on the right is the HWP file containing three registration receipts (the forms mentioned in the English information sheet), one each for:

Korea Association of Hagwon
Seoul Board of Education, Superintendent
Korea Association of Hagwon Foreign Language Educational Association

This seminar seems to be both required and legitimate. It also appears that the SMOE chose the KAFLA to host the seminar because (no big surprise here) many, if not all, of the hagweons belong to said association. It's a matter of logistics, evidently.

I have absolutely no love whatsoever for KAFLA, but I don't see anything menacing in that announcement. On the contrary, it's a lot better than many other things I've seen from Korean officialdom over the years.

I had to go to one of these about 5 years ago when I was a hagwon stallion. It's just a bunch of congratulations to ajosshis you don't know, some general information for foreigners, a few performances, and then everyone leaves thinking WTF? It's like an orientation for people who have 9 times out of 10 already oriented themselves to living in Korea.

I am in Seoul, but fortunately do not have to attend. I would imagine it's only for people in hagwons.

My boss told all the NT's at our school to go also, but it wasn't a forceful "You HAVE TO GO and give me a receipt" kind of thing. I'm guessing less than 50% of the foreign hagwon teachers in Seoul will actually show up, but that's a baseless estimate.

I will go, but only to score brownie points with my school and to win that iPad which I will immediately turn around sell on this website. Smile

As somebody on my post mentioned, it's likely not really "mandatory" since foreign teachers aren't members of this organization. Attendance is probably strongly encouraged, and might win some brownie points.

In my hagwon contract it was written that I had to attend certain workshops on weekends, but these were put on by the school itself and not by other organizations.
