Some may not like this advice, but I will give it anyway.... If your okay with not working in the states, just forget about it! If you default your creditors cannot take money out of your paycheck from a foreign country. If you default and end up working in the US than they can deduct 15% from your pay.
Plenty of reasons to GTFO of the states anyway.... |

I understand that a judgment docks a payroll by a whopping 25% as well as having power to drain cash and brokerage accounts until the judgment is paid in full. It's possible to receive a judgment without ever receiving a summons, notice of judgment, nor any news to allow you time to represent yourself in court should you have a valid factual point to make. I had a problem with getting sued for a debt that wasn't even mine. It was impossible to get it rectified as a judgment is set in stone with no appeals allowed after 10 days has passed. I didn't receive word of it, because it didn't go to my address despite having the same address for over 10 years. Our legal, financial, and economic systems are complete utter bull honkey. |

| What's your degree in? Why do you say you have to pay it off so you can get on with your life? Does using your degree to get a job interfere with your life? |

It's a little hard to buy a house and start a family with a 55k debt breathing down your neck. |

Unless you were to do it in, say, Korea. Or Japan. Or one of the many other nations we have access to as English teachers. |

If you don't live in Seoul, housing is pretty reasonable. |

| There are some interesting points here. I am in a somewhat similar situation with owing a large sum of money, but not for student loans. A negligent driver hit me and caused me a 97K medical bill, or medical bills. Since that bastard is a loser and only has a 15K insurance policy, of which the attorney gets 5K, no attorney will go after him, so I am stuck with these bills. It has been a nightmare and I dont want to pay a penny more. So I want to start a new life in Korea or Japan, or Maybe Hong Kong. I am leaning towards Japan since I speak the language some, but Korea is a close second. For me it will be a permanent move no matter what. I never again plan to live in the US. |

Didn't you have your own insurance? Uninsured Motorist (UM) and Underinsured Motorist (UIM) are basic parts of even a liability policy.
Hell, when I went to College in Southern California I used to TRY to get hit by drunk mexicans. I knew they would have no insurance, but I had good UM so the ambulance would take me to a "good" Chiropractor.
Everything ended up nicely- I walked out of the Dr office with a dorky looking neck brace and a $15,000 claim, the Dr got paid, and the mexican went on doing whatever mexicans do. Oh yeah, since the CHP report always said that the accident wasn't my fault, my insurance rates didn't go up. Since then, groups of Nigerians have parlayed my well tested plan in the Southland so I cant say for sure if it still works. |

Wow. That is hard to believe for the mere fact that you can end up crippled or dead for trying to pull a stunt like that. I only had the basic and my uninsured motorist was the same same as his 15K so no additional money there.
As someone mentioned earlier. I wonder if you could go bankrupt after you pay your student loans with credit cards or other loans that are not student loans, and then wipe all debts owed. Given that student loans are not forgiven when going bankrupt. I never thought of that. |
