I don't know how I didn't think to post this on here until now.

Normally, I would love for a barber, every week or so, to give me a nice line on my face. Since I've been in Korea however I've had to generally not expect much from a haircut, as well as give up hope completely on finding someone who uses a straight-edge razor and can cut facial hair. To this point I've either just shaved constantly or gone grizzly and not shaved at all.

I live in Mokpo. The possibility of finding something here is likely remote, but GWANGJU would seem to be a place to find a barber who can style facial hair. What I'm specifically looking for is a barber who uses a straight-edge razor and a can cut a mean line. I've attached a few pictures (edit: links provided) that only recently I acquired, of myself directly after a haircut (head and face) from a professional stylist in Seattle. This is exactly what I would like to have again.

So, Gwangju residents or anyone with knowledge on the matter, your help would be great!

Unless he's soliciting you for a roll in the hay, I don't think your opinion of a certain style of facial hair is relevant -- or interesting.

OP: Look around you. How many people do you see with this? The barbers will know how to satisfy Korean needs. If you want something special -- that is, something they have no experience with -- you're going to need to work on your Korean language skills in order to explain what you want. Even English speaking barbers might not get it without a visual aid.

Good luck. Worse comes to worst, you might have to go clean. Probably not a bad thing as facial hair isn't quite so common or fashionable in that part of the world.

In Mokpo, I don't believe I've ever seen it. Although in Gwangju I've come across a few people with SOME facial hair who seem to have it styled. Yes, of course it is true that services will be provided when a need arises, and that's why I still believe there is something in Gwangju that would work just as well. If not a straight-edge razor, a barber or stylist who is familiar with the task by other means, and has clients who are FREAKS of Korean culture and elect to use their rare facial hair.

I do speak Korean enough to explain what I'd want, but the problem is in finding people who would have information to begin with. Because I don't live in Gwangju, the best options I have now are either to consult (Korean) friends there, which I have, and to consult foreigners living there, by way of these forums.

you're going to have to learn to do it yourself, mate.

as a sidenote, has anyone else noticed the number of hair- and beauty-related threads lately?

I completely agree. How lazy can people be that they can't learn enough Korean to communicate with their barber?

Look for old fashioned barber shops usually run by old men or old women. I used to get a straight razor shave at one all the time. It was such a pampering that it was something I looked forward to each week.

Just look for a barber pole and make sure there are not a lot of young women working there. I've also found these places have a tonne of mahogany or hardwood all over their walls and entrance, Ha.

Show them a picture of what you want because it will probably be a first time for them.

If you're unsure about whether a place fits this description, ask "Myeondo hal su issoyo?" meaning "Can you do shaves?"

I'm just curious what you would say to communicate you wanted the style of shave that this guy wants [in Korean].

I apologize for underestimating the OP's Korean ability. Nonetheless, he could go to the Korean Language Q&A thread and ask for the Korean terms for things like goatee, chinstrap, sideburns, etc. As a non-Korean, I admit I'm not qualified to be giving Korean lessons. But that is irrelevant for this thread.
