I have been wondering about this for some time.

When I see these historic Korean dramas now and then, many of the men have facial hair. However on the street, it is very rare to see.

So I wonder, if facial hair was the norm centuries ago, at what point in history and for what reason did facial hair become something to be avoided by Korean men?

Anyone happen to have any insight on this?

Now it's about looking clean, shaven and conservative. I've seen some men with facial hair, but they were older (and do what they want). In any country everyone follows what everyone else is doing. It's all about the fad. If someone decides mustaches are in, they are. But for now it remains clean and shaven...

That's all I could come up with! Good luck with the hypothesizing!

Can Koreans actually grow a full beard?

When you see homeless guys that obviously have not been able to shave for weeks or months, they still have no beards.

It may be that the beards they wear for historical dramas are down to a selective re-interpretation of history. Or that only a minority of Koreans are hairy enough.

It could have also been a hair piece for the men to wear just like the head-dresses the women wore.

As for the lack of facial hair today, I believe today's metrosexual has something to do with it. Also an added perk from all the androgyny, are the great behind-enhancing jeans the men like to wear. Wink

A lot of it has to do with the "cultural genocide" of the Japanese occupation.
Traditionally Korean men kept long hair, but under the bootheels of the Japanese they had to get haircuts.
Also, in the past, they could've been much hairier... evolution and adaptation can work quickly i guess?

Or maybe the food that they are eating today contains estrogen compounds that reduces the amount of hair? If they took some testosterone, they should look like Robin Williams in no time...LOL

They probably wouldn't have worn merkins if that was the case.

I heard or read something about testosterone being partly responsible for hair loss.

It's genetics. Depending on where the bloodline has mixed in from like Manchurians, Mongols, Han...etc.if you got Mongol blood you're probably a pretty hairy mofo. Laughing
