Does anyone know which foods typically contain MSG, in korea, or any other information on MSG use here.

How prevalant is the use of MSG in Korean restaurants, and what foods typically contain it?

I've heard rumors that it's in Kimchi, Dwenjang jjigae, etc.

I used to eat the dried squid until I heard that it's coated in MSG. Any info you have would be appreciated!

Hmm, no idea about the MSG.

Good luck with your search though! Smile

Soups, frying batter, any cooked veggies, and just about anything else that calls for salt. And salty it is. They love the 1960's Japanese invention. I personally don't want it in my diet. Best to drop your school lunch and only eat out on rare occasion.

+1

I pack a home cooked Korean style lunch at least once a week, though (it used to be more) so that my coteacher sees that I like Korean food. Most of the time I pack sandwiches on whole-grain bread.

They dump loads of salt and MSG in restaurants here. Restaurants care about making tasty food that will keep you coming back. Health considerations are secondary.

It's in tons of foods. No need to worry, though. There isn't much evidence that it's harmful to you.

From Wikipedia:

"While many people believe that monosodium glutamate (MSG) is the cause of these symptoms, an association has never been demonstrated under rigorously controlled conditions, even in studies with people who were convinced that they were sensitive to the compound.[8][9][10][11] Adequately controlling for experimental bias includes a placebo-controlled double-blinded experimental design and the application in capsules because of the strong and unique after-taste of glutamates.[8]"

Fears of MSG seems to have started as "Chinese Restaurant Syndrome," which was described as period of numbness of the neck and arms, and general weakness and palpitations in a letter to the New England Journal of Medicine.

Read up on it. No scientific studies support the fact that it is harmful, even in large doses.

MSG contributes a large amount of sodium to the food, which isn't good at all. Not to mention, the flavour enhancement nature of MSG often causes people to eat more than they should, which leads to weight gain.

The worst culprit is probably ramyeon. A lot of soups will contain it aswell.

MSG is pretty strong, and therefore doesn't constitute a huge amount of sodium. As for the flavor enhancement, it's called self-control. Do you have a link?

I'd be interested to know if in fact it can reduce amount eaten since one may become satiated more easily.

I just found this link for you now

http://www.healthcastle.com/msg.shtml

Obviously it's not a harcore fact that MSG will lead to weight gain, but I've heard of several experiments being carried out on people/rats that show those who eat larger quantities of MSG tend to be more overweight.

And overweight people probably tend to eat more MSG(fast food, ramen, etc.). Correlation does not imply causation blah blah blah....

I just wanna know why MSG has such a bad rap in the first place. Why isn't table salt similarly villified? It's practically the same. It's a source of sodium. It makes foods taste better so you may be likely to eat more....

EDIT:
Just read a bit more of that article you posted Mariella, and it actually says that MSG contains a third of the sodium that table salt does.

Nice call. And one uses way less of it compared to how much salt one would use.
