I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this program?
I noticed that the MA is one year (36 credit points) and without a thesis which I find a bit odd. A final exit essay is required and correct me if wrong but that doesn't seem to be the same thing as a Master's thesis. To the academics out there am I correct? There is however a 2 year program + thesis that does lead to an M'Ed.
The eslcafe google search function gave me a few results in the NA forum but for some odd reason I couldn't sign in to send a PM to the posters that seem to have some experience. Other than the high tuition fee can anyone comment on the program? |

| My university, University of California at Davis, has an Applied Linguistics program for which the master's candidate has a choice: thesis or examination. My father obtained his master's in Civil Engineering from Stanford and he was not required to do a thesis for that program. Those two are quite reputable universities, so it doesn't seem that odd to get a master's without a thesis. |

I will be doing an MA through Columbia Teacher's College and there is no thesis. There is a 1 credit point Master's Project, which I have no idea what that entails until I have the actual seminar that tells us what we need to do for the project.
I can't comment on your specific program, as that is not what I am doing my MA in. I do know there is someone on this site that did their MA TESOL at Columbia and they said it was one of the best choices they ever made. The networking that one can do at such an institution is a big reason why people spend the big bucks to go there. (The name brand isn't a bad reason either...) |

My MS in Language Education from Indiana University also didn't require a thesis. There were 2 options: 30 credits plus thesis, or 36 credits. I chose the 36 credit route because I wanted to finish as quickly as possible.
But holy crap, 36 credits in 1 year? That's quite a load. I did mine in 1 year and 9 months, taking 2 classes each semester and doing both summer sessions. I guess you won't be working during that time, is that right? |

Yeah the program (I'm looking at the Applied Linguistics program) is going to cost you about 20,000 USD MORE than the reputable English Uni programs like Birmingham and Nottingham. There also isn't an online option. Worth it? I want to remain competitive in 15 years from now and I believe there will be a saturated market (there probably already is for the good jobs) and much less of those 2.6-3.0 12-20 week vacation 12 - 15 hour a week uni jobs.
Having an world top 10 uni MA in a TESOL/Education field can't hurt.
Mr. Pink don't you already have an M'Ed? Why did you choose COlumbia? Which program did you get into?

Yeah for what I gather the program is no walk in the park. It is full-time and there isn't any time to work. Can anyone else shed some light on this? |
