I stopped watching TV several years ago when I realized what a waste of time it generally is. I accomplished this by not owning a TV so that the temptation would not be present.

According to this link, Americans watch many hours of TV a day.

http://tvbythenumbers.com/2009/11/10/surprise-average-tv-viewing-per-day-continues-to-rise/33162

I think this is a shame, because TV is not the best use of one's time IMO. (Maybe if you are watching shows in a language you are trying to learn, but even then I wonder).

What do you think about television? Overall I think its negatives outweigh its positives. I see it as a vice, and I think families and society would be better off without it. I wish people would start watching less.

I watched the Korea/Greece game tonight! Had to look long and hard for the remote!

Even when back in the States, I almost never watched TV.

The news now and then (less than once a month). Discovery channel (less than once in 2 months).

What IS it that people watch???

I have to admit, I love tv. I am a tv junkie. But I don't think I watch the same kinds of programs that a lot of Americans watch. I like channels like History and Discovery. I also watch forensic crime shows and documentaries. I generally hate reality shows, though there are 1 or 2 that I watch. I think I have watched maybe 2 episodes of American Idol in the 9(?) years it has been on the air and that was because I was at someone else's house and I was forced to.

I think people watch way too much trash tv, but I don't think television itself is necessarily a bad thing. It's how you use it.

TV junkie here. In a year, I usually follow a total of 20 different shows. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your POV), a lot of them are getting cancelled or ending this year.

My husband and I watch an hour-long show every night and sometimes an additional 30 minute sitcom/cartoon. We usually are "catching up" on at least one completed series and then watch the new episodes of series currently on air. We primarily watch sci-fi shows or Showtime/HBO original series.

I spend a lot of time online, though and reading comics or books. We both also play videogames.

I think it's cool to have different interests. TV series are better than movies, I think, because they allow for more character growth and depth. Many TV series have very intensive story arcs and may require the viewer to do additional research in history, theology, philosophy, science, etc to understand references.

When it comes to communication technologies, it ain't what you do, but the way that you do it. While it can homogenize a culture, to be sure, it can also create community where once there were only individuals. I could go on, but it would only rehash my previous argument. TV isn't bad. Some people just make bad choices.

To lounge around and not bother to exercise, nor go out and meet people, not challenging oneself by doing something nor taking a good look at how one is wasting one's time away?

Rolling Eyes

Who said anything about never exercising or going out? Do you choose one, and only one, activity to do during any given day? Watching television is not an all or nothing proposition. (Bought a tv, guess I have to kiss the relatives goodbye, quit school, and find a grocery delivery service.)

What is with people and a black and white view of the world?!

I'm getting frustrated with people today. I'm logging off and going to watch tv.

I can honestly say that I don't consider cuddling up on my husband's lap with a glass of cab or some tea and a soft blanket time wasted. No, not at all.

Besides, I can knit while I watch...

This is a weird post. TV is fine. If you don't want to watch it, don't watch it, but don't think you're better than people who do watch it. I guess watching TV is bad but posting on Daves ESL is OK? Sounds pretty hypocritical to me.

Anyways, I watch TV online. Follow a few shows (including Lost, RIP), and watch my liberal rag shows online: Democracy Now!, Rachel Maddow, Keith Olbermann, The Daily Show and Colbert Report. I don't consider watching the news a waste of time...

Yes, I think TV is a waste of time. I think sitting behind your computer posting about how much TV Americans watch, just so you can act like you're so superior, is a much more productive use of one's time.

I usually just follow a few shows... although it's dwindling.
Justified is the only series i watch now until Sons of Anarchy picks up again.
and I'm watching Deadwood for the first time and rewatching BSG. But yeah, honestly that's only 1 hour a night.....the rest is spent playing games Wink

None, I decommissioned my TV before I ever even turned it on once. It's shelved out of the way.

I watched about 2-3 hours of TV a week when I lived in Korea, but as soon as I got back home and bought a 42inch Sony Bony HD from COSTCO for 780 bucks and got the upgraded HD cable package with DVR so I can record my favorite shows, I have been watching TV non-stop!

So many good shows to catch up on...don't know where to start.

Love that show "Six Feet Under" - never even knew it was on the air back in the early part of the decade. The guy from Dexter is on that show.
