Surplus resources?
How about spending it on a social security net for all the homeless folks around subway stations. Or putting up solar panels to provide free electricity. Or actually building a society and improving education, sexual equality, and protecting their natural environment.? |
You "let's fix everything at home before we do anything in space" people need to learn some basic facts.
1) Things don't stop benefiting the Earth just because they're a few hundred km up. The satellite Korea tried to launch with the Naro (at least the first launch) was to be put into an orbit more along latitudes from Korea to Malaysia, which would have helped in events such as the 2007 oil spill.
2) How does spending money improve sexual equality?
3) KARI makes up 0.12% of Korea's total budget. Health and welfare makes up 28%, so Korea spends 230 times more on this than its aerospace sector. Gutting KARI two times over wouldn't increase spending on health and welfare by a single percent. |

Well, the government could be spending more money on anti-spousal abuse campaigns, women's shelters etc, I guess.
Though I doubt that any dearth of funding in said areas is a direct result of money being spent on space programs. |

An "advanced" country because it fires a rocket?
A country that:-
a) beats dogs to death and accepts animal cruelty
b) Does not enforce many of its laws
c) Has one of the highest suicide rates
d) has the longest working hours
e) has a low quality of life index
f) is destroying its environment for short-term economic gains
g) exists on gender inequalities
h) counts prostitution as 4 % of its GDP
i) is rife with domestic and sexual abuse
j) is rife with high-level corruption
k) encourages anti-foreign attitudes and trade practises
etc etc.
Korea doesn't need more technology and infrastructure, it needs a social revolution. |

As opposed to what societies that riot over soccer games?
Have regular drive by shootings?
Counts narcotics as 4% of its GDP?
Destroys entire bodies of water with shoddy oil rigs?
Starts wars over manufactured intelligence?
Engages in colonialism/imperialism?
Has (if you subscribe to a near majority view) war criminals as the leadership of its previous regime?
Is beset by serious social upheaval regarding immigration?
Can't et its health care system straight?
Is about to have its currency implode?
Has a terrible record regarding criminal justice and race?
Executes people on a regular basis?
Drinks 44 ozs. of soda in a single sitting?
Get a clue dude, EVERY nation on the face of the planet is out of whack. There is no such thing as an advanced nation on planet Earth. Korea is out of whack in some areas, but so is the rest of the world. 90% of what you listed happens to the same degree in other countries. The other 10% is to a lesser or greater degree but is still there.
Korea is not some shining city on the hill but neither is anywhere else. Anyone who is playing this 'advanced' game has no clue of the true levels of human development necessary for our species to become enlightened. There is fundamentally little difference between Egypt of 2500 BC and a society of Sweden/Singapore/The U.S. of today.
Humanity doesn't need this silly game of I'm advanced or not. Humanity needs a social revolution. |

You make a good point, but even Korea takes part in some of those things, too! Except replace soda with soju |
