A final option would be to buy a refurbished unit from Apple Korea. You will usually get a 20%-25% discount (education discount is only 10%) and the computer will still come with a one-year warranty. However, you can sometimes get a unit with some cosmetic flaws.

I was looking at the refurbished models on the online Korean Apple Store...I have my eye on last year's 15-inch Intel Core Duo model. I can't decide if the new Intel Core i7 is worth the extra money or not. Anyone with the new i7 model have any insight?

at the moment, the mac website (stateside) is giving away a free ipod touch (after rebate) if you buy using the education discount.

that, and the new macbooks purchased in Korea (even thru the edu discount) are still $150-200 more expensive than if you purchase it in the states.

I'm extremely bitter about missing out on the ipod touch...I desperately need a new ipod Mad I'm in the States right now (moving to Busan soon) and I don't have enough money to buy a new mac AND move to Busan (I actually don't have enough money for the macbook pro I want, period Rolling Eyes )

so it looks like I'll have to shell out the extra $$$ after I've settled in Busan.

oh, and to whoever asked about Amazon -

Macs aren't more expensive here (at the current US exchange rate).
Depending on your home state (and tax rate) you may actually save money ordering in Korea.
Try it yourself. Run your order through the Korean site and the US site and see what the diff would be.
(That excludes the ipod offer. It's only temp anyhoo.)

I cant really tell much difference except that there's higher resolution available. I did notice that from my work's laptop MBP 13" the screen is noticeably brighter. Has about 3-4 extra notches of brightness.

I just bought my 3rd Mac last weekend at Emart. My girlfriend told me that if you buy electronics there on the weekend that there is usually a sale price. She was right, I was just shy of saving 200,000 won.

If you are worried about not being able to access Korean sites, just download Google Chrome or Firefox. Should solve the problem although I have yet to encounter a site I could not access.

LorenChristopher - thanks for the help, man. Anyway, I took my bike over there to try and find the place that sold refurbished Macs but no such luck - and I drove my motorcycle along all of those streets. I tried asking in the Apple store at COEX too (brought a Korean along) but they didn't know what I was talking about.

Could you give me a little more info on the place? What stores are near it?

Just out of curiosity are the keyboards different in Korea than in the US?

Can you get an American Keyboard if needed?

I am also going to get a new ipod when I get to Korea are the prices comparable to the US?

Depending on the exchange rate. When the won is volatile, you could lose alot. ATM, the Korean side is fifty bucks higher.

if I had the macbook pro marked as a gift or even had it taken out of the box and look like it has been used would Korean customs still try to make me pay an import tax?

Probably not, but isn't a shiny new one lovely? Honestly, get on here for a few dollars more. It's less likely to be banged up or stolen. I've had a few things stolen from my parcels in the past.

after checking the prices, I would pay around 350 dollars more for one here, considering the student savings and free ipod, and lower price I get from USA stores.

Did you factor in the education savings from Apple Korea? The only advantage from the USA store is the free iPod. at the moment

Do people really pay 3.8 million for a medium-specced laptop?

I'm shocked.
