after checking the prices, I would pay around 350 dollars more for one here, considering the student savings and free ipod, and lower price I get from USA stores.

Did you factor in the education savings from Apple Korea? The only advantage from the USA store is the free iPod. at the moment

I don't get the discount. I work for a hagwon.

^^ ask a Korean to apply for you, claiming to be a student/teacher.

Worst that could happen is they say "no"

I don't have any friends in Korea nor would any of my coworkers do it for me so I think that option is out. And I'm pretty sure they would require some sort of verification anyways.

So no one knows about getting a macbook through customs without paying import tax?

Don't mean to toot my own horn here, but I was able to get a clearance MacBook (the model that was supposed to be labeled "Pro" but wasn't...same internal specs) for $499 at my local Best Buy. I upgraded the internal HDD to 500GB and am planning on BootCamping it before leaving the States.

I'd look around your local stores and see if they have deals before heading back out just to save yourself some $$ on taxes and shipping costs (but I'm sure everyone here knows this). :]

Yes, it can clear customs w/o paying tax.

First, have it shipped to a friend/relative at home who will TAKE IT OUT OF THE BOX Then you can label it "used" and get on with life, no customs duty (they cant prove it wasn't used if there is no box)

I know I'll sound like a tool but I really like the shiny apple retail box. Can my sister just open everything and remove all the wrapping and put it back in the retail box? Can I still claim it as used?

Not a huge issue, if it won't work then I'll have her use a fedex box.

What if you put the Apple box in another box? I doubt they'd care as long as the outside is your standard shipping box. I'm not an official on this, but that's my 2c. Wink

So after having done the calculations, currency exchange rate, shipping, tax, etc. I finally bought a macbook pro 13inch 2.66ghz from the Korea store.

Wonder how long it will take to receive it.

Update:

To Darkray, you said it was impossible to get the Macbook with an education discount, that isn't true. I just got mine yesterday (ordering was a pain) but keep in mind you need to order with a Korean CC- no calls / no faxes to verify who you are. Idea

Also: check Gmarket too- some things on that website are cheaper (like RAM) but overall I felt the education discount was best for me Wink

The education (student/teacher) discount is around 100K for every Million won. And you can't use the discount for refurbs, they already give you a pretty significant discount. (actually lower than the ed discount)
