I would suggest that anyone who has a real issue with this is facing subway travel for the first time. In my experience, it's not all that different anywhere in the world, and in fact is generally more orderly here. But yes, you do have to be sort of insistent, you may have to bump into people or touch them on your way in or out. |
Where in the world have you experienced the same?
I'm from New York City. While the odor and homeless problem is practically non-existent in Seoul, I find it difficult to believe that you think the shoving is on par with anywhere else. At the peak of rush hour Kiev, Austria, Moscow, Tokyo, and NYC are all better. Seoul is more like a live hockey game even in the off hours |
THIS. There may be a crowd, but people wait for the riders to get off the subway before they go on. If it's rush hour, they won't get on in a line, but people can get off and there's a path for them to get through the crowd. |

In my opinon it's not the elderly who are the problem, it's the youth. For the record, I let the older people come on in. They're old and wobbly and need to sit down. And if my grandparents were still alive I'd hope someone would give them the same courtesy. The younger people are the problem. Specifically, young women aged about 15 ~ 25. They barge in and run for the first seat. Wether it's cause they're feet are hurtin from poor footwear choice (20~25) or because they're jsut lazy teenagesr (15~20) they ALWAYS get in my way.
I'm not an aggressive person and I absolutely refuse to plow into another human being. I'm young myself (~late twenties) and frankly, I'm never in such a rush or in such need of a seat so as to plow my way on or off a subway. I wait and let people on. But, the longer I'm here the more I scope a seat and if nobody is in my way I go for it. |

I don't have to run for a seat--I just toss my bag onto one like I see the ajumas do.
I always get up for an older person or parent of a young child. |

LOL I've yet to see the ajumma toss in three years. I'll have to dedicate a day to hunting it down. |

| I'll take disorderliness over the rampant pickpocketing in Italy. According to Google, it's even worse in Spain. (been to and experienced the former, not the latter) |

The first time I saw it it was as if I was seeing the world anew. It was brilliant! |

| I've tried to use my bag to save a seat for my less aggressive husband, but I was overcome with feelings of guilt and he is too gentlemanly to sit while a woman stands. What a sexist jerk! |

| Seoul is better than Shanghai, where I saw people literally wrestling each other and throwing their bags from the door to hold seats. Absolutely disgraceful |

Its also better than London's tube, which is chronically late and fills up with wierdos and psychotic knife-carrying thugs after a certain hour. |

The London I lived in seems to be a whole different world from the one others on this board describe. Yes you get weirdos (isn't that the case everywhere in the world though?) but psychotic knife-carrying thugs? DAMN, what line were you travelling on? |
