Just a warning, folks.

My visa application was just rejected because for my criminal background check I had obtained - under advisement of Dave's forum - the New York City Certificate of Good Conduct. It was rejected. Apparently, because it was a city-wide and not a statewide check.

Lucky for me, I was able to obtain a RI statewide criminal background check (and under three hours! Compare that to the three weeks NYC took). I just wanted to put out the word to anyone else using Dave's to supplement their research for the visa application process.

I know there are multiple threads on here discussing state-wide checks. Haven't seen any on city-checks.

maybe you only saw and found what you were looking for; the answers you find when doing research do depend a lot on one's state of mind, you know?

at any rate, something as important as applying for a visa from another country one should gather as much advice as possible and not depend on one single source, it's common sense. maybe you don't have any? Wink

That's interesting...

I used a NYC GCL twice before and it was accepted- the first time it was past the expiry date of two months Shocked

Did you have yours apostilled? I know immi won't take it any other way now Rolling Eyes

Sounds like out of date information. I knew to get a state check from researching on Dave's, but that evidently hasn't always been necessary.

the real question is why someone would go from a New york CITY check to a check in RHODE ISLAND. Inter-state crime spree from Yonkers to Rochester, no doubt.... Wink

For the record (and you ~delightfully witty~ skeptics out there), I did have everything correctly notarized and apostilled, and made my decision to apply with the CGC based on multiple sources of information. Now I realize it was something of a potshot, and that a more expensive alternative would have been more reliable. Lucky for me, RI was both easier and cheaper. What a blessedly tiny state.

Also, I obtained the CGC while attending college in Manhattan, but since graduating have moved in with my dad in RI. Hence the state-change. No dead hookers, sorry for the disappointment.

You were supposed to go to 25 Beaver St in Manhattan and get the statewide check. You get what you need in 1 or 2 days (based on whether you come in the morning or afternoon) - AND - they give you all the directions on how to get it apostilled.

airfilter - do you mind if I quote you at the top of the post for the benefit of people like myself, who had trouble finding the correct info and ended up with the wrong directions?

I'll keep that in mind, however I'm not being a skeptic.

It worked for me twice. Must have been the immigration official you talked to, because we all know they aren't used to following the rules (they make up their own usually)

Wish I'd had your luck! Fingers crossed for this round.

Go ahead.
OH, and be sure to tell them you need it for a foreign nation so that you get an official document. Trust me.
