What I like about Korea:

You can drink alcohol at school. Drinking a makgeolli the principal gave me to celebrate the openingof the new gym right now. Very Happy

You can buy romaine lettuce already washed and cut everywhere.

Cheap smokes, and one can smoke almost anywhere.

Booze widely available 24/7, often cheaply, and one can drink almost anywhere (outside the local mart is wonderful. Can't do that where I'm from without getting tossed in handcuffs).

Public transit.

Decent lookin' broads.

BBQ's, haejanguks, and gukbaps to help you back on your feet after a night of heavy smokin' and boozin'.

Meeting people from several different western countries.

I suppose if I didn't like drinking or smoking, this list would be considerably shorter.

I agree that boozin' and smokin' in Korea is great...the problem is once you stop drinking. That's when you kind of sober up and say "Why am I living here again?"

But since I am taking a lot of flak for Korea bashing these days I will mention some of the things I do like here:

galbi, u-turns, near complete autonomy at work, 4+ months of paid vacation, ease of saving money, ability to drive a clunker car because getting cars worked on is crazy cheap, low gas/electricity bills

Just had a side of roast pork delivered.

Watching Season 5 of Six Feet Under which took under an hour to download.

Gettn' a mild buzz goin' for a buck.

I'll do less than 3 and a half hours of real work tomorrow. There is work waiting for me that I will get paid extra for. Plus, I will get paid twice next Thursday and Friday, 'cos of some weird open day deal.

The broads aren't bad either.

Korea has been kind to me.

It's hard, but you can do hiking and marathon (meaning all sorts of competitive but fun running)... although those often involve booze, too.

What do I like?

Food available round the clock.
Safe for us ladies (fairly).
People are polite (I know, the pushing and shoving, but people don't get as verbally grumpy or yell-y).
Parks everywhere, stocked with workout equipment.
Sticker photos!
Adorable socks.
The mountains are nice.
The culture of people sitting around in parks all night, in the summer, safe and fun.
Good starting point for cheap and fun vacations.
PC bangs.
Saunas.
Fun skin products.

Lots of skin products/cosmetics to play with.

Galbi/Dak galbi

Walking to pretty much everything I need.

My students (for the most part)

Cheap travel
Exploring little islands.
24 hour stores. Not just for booze either
Sitting outside 7-11 in the summer
My scooter
The adjosshi who keeps hold of all the stuff I order in Gmarket until I get home.
Cucumber Kimchi
Fast downloads
Being able to go anywhere in the country, and being able to find a cheap motel within minutes. You're never stuck anywhere.
Toddlers with the squeaky dog-toy shoes. It is a silly amount of cute, and a good alternative to reins.
Ori Hoonje (smoked duck)
