My school told me that I am required by law to attend this seminar from 9-1 on saturday and failure to do so will result in a fine. I know of no other school that is requiring their teachers to go. Anyone know anything about this?

hey,

my school told me I should go but that it was optional. No other hogwan teachers I know have heard about it at all. There's a more complete thread about it here: http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=185062

out of curiosity, were you just told about it today too?

Just nod your head and tell your boss you'll go and then don't go. When your boss asks you (if he/she asks you) why you didn't attend, tell him/her that you forgot, bat your eyes, say you're sorry and smile.

This thread will probably be locked because it's a duplicate, but I'll just add here that it's likely mandatory for the school driectors to attend, not you. After all, you're not a member of that organization, so how can it compel you to attend. You are probably very strongly encouraged to attend, but you could always use the excuse that if it were important they would have given you more than three days' notice.
