I want to go to Semuc Champey next time, as well as Copan, Honduras. It's one of my favorite countries because there is so much to do and see there, the food is good, the people are mostly friendly and I love the culture. Someday I hope to retire on Lake Atitlan.

Semuc Champey is absolutely mind-boggling. Really, really special place.

Copan is cool but if you've seen Tikal they might be a bit of a let down. They've got some amazing and very well preserved glyphs, though. I really like the layout of the town as well.

When I was there they had some dilapidated carnival going on with some of the sketchiest rides I'd ever been on. Woooh, won't forget that experience.

Second the Copan compared to Tikal. It's not much in comparison, though still worth the trip imo. Nothing like developing world carnival rides to get your blood flowing! There was a nice open-air bar/grill being ran by some expat Americans I went to which was nice.

You're right about the Garifuna, though there is a small Rasta population there as well. I didn't spend much time in that area so I'm sure you know it better than I.

I've heard that Livingston and the Caribbean coast is not very exciting. This guy we met said he didn't like it at all and it was just tons of mosquitoes. I'd still like to go, just to see it.

It's worth a trip I suppose. Regarding mosquitos watch out..malaria is definitely not an after thought down there. As far as beaches I'd go up to Belize or something. Maybe Honduras? Guatemala definitely isn't known for their beaches, when there is so much other stuff to do.

Ah, that's exactly what I was going to say.

Guatemala hands down.

ditto.

I also fell in love with Olympos, Turkey. Go for the amazing beach and tree houses.

I'm still young compared to you COF (certified old farts) (I'm 24) so haven't been around as much as you.

My first international vacation, when I was 14, to Italy, got me hooked on travel. My dad planned an awesome trip.

Then my year in Spain when I was 16 (probably the best "trip" of my life, even though it wasn't as much a vacation as a study abroad). I love Spain...

A week of skiing in Japan was great, also because I just bought the ticket on a whim and had great snow.

I have a 5 month trip around Asia coming up that will be my best trip of my life so far...

followed by a bike trip from Canada to Argentina that will top it starting in (probably) March of 2012.

I don't feel sorry for bums working desk jobs their whole lives!!

My best trips have all been about who I went with (or made friends with) and not so much where I went.

Best trip was Mexico with our latin jazz band as a teen. I never would have crawled through our 400 year old hotel's secret exits and stuff if I wasn't fooling around with my insane friends. lol... Good times.

I boxed for six months in Thailand and I always miss Chiang Mai (never went anywhere else) but it's more about the friends I made and the lifestyle I had.

Also, traveling for the purpose of festivals can often be a lot more fun than travelling just for the destination. I had an awesome time at the Coachella Valley Music Festival this year but you'd never find me in Palm Springs otherwise. Again, this was a road trip with the boys which is what really made it fun.

Did a great Rhine River/Low Countries trip last summer. Started in Amsterdam and made my down to Cologne, Koblenz, and some little German towns with day trips to Mainz and Aachen to worship Gutenberg and Charlemagne, before heading up into Belgium and beer wonderland.

"My best trips have all been about who I went with"
or who you meet along the way.

Vietnam - friendliest people in the world. Southern VT.

Then, I went back to Mexico. VT gets a runner up.

Eastern Eu (Romania/Bulgaria/Moldovia) boast the most beautiful women on the planet. Not so much for the men.

I like NoCal alot.

Rochester, NY is a cool, historical place with a nice vibe.

I also would have to say Semuc Champey was great. Highly recommend it.

And yes, Guatemala is definitely worth visiting in general. I think I prefered Xela over Antigua. Chichi was fun although there seemed to be as many tourists as locals.

I don't know what my best trip would be. The most memorable were:

1. Going from Cairo up to Aleppo, Syria via Jordan and coming back via Israel. Spent about 6 weeks in Egypt (a couple weeks too long IMO), 10 days in Syria, a week in Israel, and a week in Jordan.

2. 3 months in Asia, with half that time hanging out in Bangladesh and crossing north India.

When in India, I met a few people who had spent months traveling there and they still had only seen a few states. That is one country one could devote over a year to and still not see a substantial amount of the country.
