I've been offered a contract by E. Bo-Young Talking Club in Daejeon. Has anyone heard anything about this school or any of the other Talking Club locations?
Here's my contract. I haven't signed yet.

E. Bo-Young Talking Club
Employment Agreement for Teacher

Contract Duration: July 2010 to July 2011

Clause 1 (Appointment)
a. The employer agrees to employ the teacher during the period stated herein.
b. The teacher agrees to accept employment and will work in her full capacity for the school.

Clause 2 (Period of Employment)
a. The total Agreement term is for one year, commencing from the first teaching day, ending on the last teaching day of the teacher�s twelfth full teaching session, according to the Talking Club session calendar.
b. During the duration of this contract and without prior consent of the employer, the employer can deny a release letter to the employee seeking another job position elsewhere.

Clause 3 (The Employer�s Responsibilities)
a. The employer is required to provide support to the teacher in her full capacity, working together to provide quality English instruction under the terms stated in the contract.
b. The employer will honor the terms and conditions of employment, as stated within this contract.
c. The employer will guarantee the teacher a salary of 2,200,000 Korean won per teaching session in consideration of the teacher�s teaching hours and proper preparation for the classes.

Clause 4 (The Teacher�s Responsibilities and Duties)
a. During the terms of this Agreement, the teacher must cooperate and comply with the instructions and disciplines of the school. Assisting the �Supervisor/Director� she must carry out assignments as directed by the employer. The �Supervisor/Director� will be responsible for establishing and communicating the �Standards of Performance� as related to the duties stated in this contract.
b. The Teacher must be adequately prepared for the classes in advance, preparing a detailed lesson plan for each class, every day.
c. At all times during the term of this contract, teachers must maintain a clean and neat appearance. While suits are not required, a professional appearance is desirable.
d. The teacher�s work will include the following:
1. Teaching English to students.
2. Develop educational programs and materials expanding off of what is already provided in the Talking Club curriculum.
3. Curriculum design and implementation.
4. Indoor/Outdoor activities for/with students.
5. Level testing, grading, evaluation, and assessment of students.
6. Providing students with individualized care/
7. Attending teachers meetings, training, and workshops.
8. Other related E Bo-Young Talking Club activities and requirements (Please refer to teachers manual)

Clause 5 (Working Hours)
a. During the term of this Agreement, the teacher should work in cooperation with the Supervisor/Director from Monday through Friday, and during special events.
b. Teachers ill be required to attend some special events throughout the year (Workshops, graduation ceremony, etc) which may fall on a Saturday. Teachers do not receive additional compensation for these days.
c. The teacher agrees to teach 100 teaching hours a session, while adequately preparing for each class. (Each session is approximately one month in duration)


Clause 6 (Salary and Overtime Rate)
a. 1 teaching hour is equal to 60 minutes.
b. The employer agrees to pay the teacher a salary of 2,200,000 Korean Won for 100 teaching hours per session and preparation for classes.
c. The payment of the teacher�s salary is to be made on __ of each month, after the required work is completed.
d. Each teaching hour exceeding the 100 teaching hours/session will be considered as overtime. The payment for the overtime will be 22,500 Korean Won per each teaching hour. Attendance at scheduled staff meetings and workshops, along with preparation for classes is mandatory and is not considered as teaching hours.


Clause 7 (Tax)
Income tax and inhabitants� taxes will be withheld from the salary in accordance with the Korean laws.


Clause 8 (Transportation)
a. Round trip economy airfare is provided with the one-year contract from the teacher�s nearest airport to the international airport in Korea. Transportation from the airport to the E. Bo-Young Talking Club school in which the teacher will be teaching will be provided.
b. If the teacher leaves the school prior to completing 12 months for any reason as agreed to in this contract, the teacher must reimburse the school the cost of the airfare paid by the school or the school may deduct the equivalent amount from the teacher�s last month�s pay.


Clause 9 (Orientation Period)
a. Upon arrival in Korea, the teacher will be guaranteed three days for orientation, training, and general time to settle down before being expected begin her regular teaching work.
b. During the orientation period the teacher is required to attend the official E. Bo-Young Talking Club training at the head office, learning about the school system. Upon completion, the teacher will receive a certificate, becoming a certified E. Bo-Young Talking Club teacher.


Clause 10 (Medical Insurance)
a. Medical insurance is to be provided by Korean Medical Insurance Union or a different private health insurance company/organization.
b. Half of the insurance premium is to be paid by the employer, while the other half is to be covered by the teacher.


Clause 11 (Vacation, Holidays, and Sick Days)
a. The teacher will be allowed holidays during national holidays, while vacation days are allowed only during the days allowed/stated in the Talking Club session calendar.
b. The teacher may use up to 3 paid sick days per year provided they bring a doctor�s note from a company-recognized hospital. Any additional sick days beyond the 3 provided will be counted as absences, and the payment will be calculated according to the daily rate/hourly rate.


Clause 12 (Accommodations)
a. The school will provide the teacher with furnished accommodation.
b. Furnishing being provided by the employer includes: television, refrigerator, washing machine, bed, wardrobe, fan, kitchen table, basic utensils, chairs, two-burner gas hot plate, and a telephone. The teacher will be expected to provide her own pillow, pillowcase, sheets, etc.
c. Selection of the apartment and its location is to be made by the employer, and will be made without consulting with the teacher.
d. The deposit and monthly rent is the full responsibility of the employer.
e. Any and all other living costs are to be the full responsibility of the teacher. (All utilities)
f. For the first three months, the employer will withhold a safety deposit of 100,000 Korean Won each month, for a total deposit of 300,000 Korean Won.


Clause 13 (Severance Payment)
Upon completion of this one-year contract, the teacher will receive a severance payment of 2,200,000 Korean Won, equal to one month�s salaries, in accordance with Korean Laws. This payment will be made at the time of completion of the contract period and any and all income taxes are to be withheld.

Clause 14 (Dismissal or Voluntary Resignation)
a. The employer reserves the right to dismiss the teacher from employment for the following causes:
1. Neglect or inability to perform her duties stipulated in this agreement.
2. Frequent absences from work.
3. Receiving two warning letters.
4. Criminal behavior or misconduct according to Korean Law.
5. Failure to fulfill one�s duties or damaging the business operation of the school due to reasons of the teacher�s interests in employment elsewhere.
b. The employer agrees to give the employee the courtesy of 20 working days notice in the event of dismissal. However, in the case of a teacher�s criminal behavior, misconduct or with any discretion thereof, she will be dismissed from employment immediately, without warning or notice.
c. In the event the teacher resigns from employment, she must give 30 working days notice to the employer.

Clause 15 (Governing Law and Jurisdiction)
a. This Agreement is governed under the laws of the Republic of Korea and any breach of this contract, in any form, may result in prosecution through the legal system in the Republic of Korea.
b. This Agreement is made final and firm unless any material modification or amendment to this Agreement is executed with the full knowledge and consent of the undersigned and incorporated into this Agreement.

...100 hours per teaching "session" sounds a little strange. It's sounds like double-speak for, "We can deduct money from your salary due to the arbitrary and prejudicial definition of the word "session".

I didn't see any vacation time.

I had an overall very bad experience with an EBY franchise in Incheon.

Get this fixed. The contract is from a particular day to a a day twelve months later. For example, from 1 July 2010 to 30 June 2011.

This also is wrong. Your employment commences on the date you arrive in South Korea on the employment visa. It also ends, as noted above, exactly one year later (the day prior to the anniversary date of the beginning of the contract). The way this portion of the contract is worded, your employer can easily get away with not paying you severance or return flight.

Well, they can dream all they want about release letters.

Teaching sessin had better be one calendar month and not some nifty calculation that the hagweon likes to use. Otherwise, you're not getting good pay.

Tell them to slap those standards into the contract. This is a convenient way for the employer to change the rules of the game without contractual concerns.

Approximately one month or exactly one month? Have them change this to exactly one month.

They're on crack. The usual ratio I've seen in my time here is 40 minutes for elementary students, 45 minutes for middle schoolers, and 50 minutes for high schoolers. Now, if you're fine with 50 minutes for all level of students, that's cool. But a full 60 minutes as a teaching hour gives you no time between some classes, thereby putting you in hock with the boss. It also can burn you out.

Korea makes a big deal out being "the most wired country on Earth," so they should have absolutely no problem with paying you for the month worked on the last working day of that month. Any other arrangement is bad juju.

Screw 'em. The usual bit for this is if you leave the school prior to six months' employ, you owe the cost of the flight to Korea. If you leave after six months' employ but before completion of a full twelve months, you simply do not get a paid flight home. Now, they may have merely used bad wording, but you might want to have that clarified.

This, obviously, should count as one of the seminars mentioned above. It is also paid time. Do not let anyone snow you that this is prior to beginning your contract or that it's unpaid time.

Screw 'em. If the Korean government has licensed the doctor, that's good enough. Or you could ask for a list up front. There's no guarantee that list won't change on you, though.

In other words: You're screwed if they put you in a hovel. Change this.

The law requires 30 days, not 20 working days.

Or you can just simply quit with no notice as there's no law requiring this and this contract doesn't have any penalties listed for failing to give 30 working days notice.

There should also be a statement in the contract that the English version is the governing version of the contract.

I'd give this outfit a pass.

Sure isn't much vacation offered outside of national holidays. Rolling Eyes How often do you paid?

I used to work for an EBY in Daegu. As with any hagwon, every branch is different. Having said that, I found myself teaching much less than 100 hours/month (the session they speak of), usually 85-90. Problem was, I was there from 130-900 every day, regardless of how many classes I had. On one day a week, my last class ended at about 545, but I had to stick around until 900.
Overall, I had a pretty positive experience there, and only left in search of higher pay.You get a lot of holidays, however you DON'T have a full week vacation in the Summer and a full week in the Winter like most hagwons. What you get is like a 5-day weekend in each.
