I'v read a lot about people in public schools who always are having their classes cancelled. I don't ever remember having class cancelled when going to school here in the States.

What do so many get cancelled?

Korean children are subjected to a ton of local (dong) state (do) and federal testing, so classes are cancelled often for that. Otherwise, the usual, field trips, sports day, etc. Bring a good book to school always, becuase you won't find out until the very last minute.

Sometimes it is just that PS NETs don't teach the class. For example, with finals coming up, some KETs may request/demand to take your class time to prep them for the test.

I had 1 canceled today for a listening test (SMOE/govt/district level, I have no idea).

Cool, they have a final exam coming up on July 2nd. It's extremely rare for class to be canceled, but it happened a number of times one week in preparation for this special game day we had. Yes, they prepared many days straight for a game day. LOL

School goes onto several weeks longer until July 24th, so I'm not sure how that's going to play out.

Everyone's said the reason's for why they are cancelled and they're true.

Just take them as a bonus, you get paid for doing nothing.... How much notice you're given varies sometimes literally 5 minutes sometimes more than a week (i've been lucky).

Just go with the flow and enjoy the time off. When I was at a Hagwan sometimes I had 5 minutes notice for extra classes as well... Again you just have to go with the flow.

I just got here last week. After I got my teaching schedule my main co-teacher started telling me, "Oh don't teach this class yet, or this class. . ." See, final exams are taking place at my school in just over a week, so they don't want me starting in most of the classrooms yet.

So right now I'm teaching one morning class of first years (middle school), and an "advanced" afterschool class in the evening. In between I have a very long day, during which I might help prepare or grade speaking tests (which I did today and yesterday), and the rest is just deskwarming, deskwarming, deskwarming. I'm being paid to play a whole lot of Spider Solitaire and surf the internet (that's right the school provides me with a computer).

This week my Wed classes were canceled because of exams, then Thursday and Friday they are on a field trip. So good! Laughing

It sucks when they move a class to an earlier time though and don't tell you, meh

I'm like most people in that I like cancelled classes, but it further instils in students the triviality of learning and education. I've had classes cancelled to let students practice dance steps for an upcoming performance or another. It's all so silly. And this happens quite frequently. Our principal is an absolute boob. Clearly the cream doesn't rise to the top in education.

It's not unlike a homeroom teacher bringing her students to the English class late week after week. It further speaks to the students how trivial English class really is.

because English is the lowest priority and the Korean teachers will never hesitate to let you know how insignificant and unimportant your classes are to them.

I have absolutely ZERO problems with canceled classes. They can cancel all the classes they want.

BS on that. English is the third highest priority after Korean and Math classes.
"speaking" English on the other hand.... not that high on the priority list. a lot of classes will be cancelled because teachers want to prep the students for tests.

Actually, I think Korean isn't as highly regarded as you think. I'd rank it Math, English, then Korean or the sciences.

In elementary school, English is obviously low priority. It is a "subject" class, grouped in with computers, music, "practical science" (home ed), and PE (all of which I am sure also get canceled quite a bit). It isn't graded. It isn't considered all that important other than for appearances.

IMHO

I'll buy that. Traditional drumming is right above English classroom with computer class being right next door all in the rear building. The only new part of the school is English Zone and it's very different (and much nicer by far) than any other part of the school. It's where these occasional special formal meetings are also held where it's off limits allowing me a glimpse into what typical Korean school is like in a typical Korean school classroom.
