Was it? I can't remember a worse one. James was the only player who did what he was supposed to

Yes, I've watched them since 82, the last world cup was bad, but that was simply embarrasing. When Anderton was taken to the 1998 World cup over Le Tissier I accepted I would never see an England team play football like Argentina or Brazil, or even the Germans. 12 years on and now I'm having to accept that I'll never see an English team play football like South Korea or Chile.
By the way well played the U.S.A, you played with no little skill and a ModEdit heap of pride, can't ask for more than that.

truly awful. They should quietly get on a plane home and have done with it. The thing I cheered the most is when the crowd booed them off the pitch.

Absolutely abysmal, I have been listening to the radio and there have been mentions of something going on in the camp, they arent settled apparently. Conjecture though, of course. They may just be underperforming shites.

Sets it up nicely for a stomping win over Slovenia on Wednesday though doesnt it? The USA have done wonderful things by drawing against Slovenia, keeps us in with a shout of topping the group.

That was truly a shocking performance, but things need to be changed now there's no way he can't make certain changes.

Tell you what might help, if English people weren't SO negative about it, and stopped behaving like we should automatically be given the right to go through to the next round.

I stayed up to watch it. As an Irish person I liked the result but as a fan of football it was shocking.

English players simply couldn't keep possession. I know this isn't exactly new but for the love of god, it was annoying. They need to bite the bullet and drop Lampard or Gerrard. You can't have two guys who can' pass and have no positional sense in midfield. Heskey also should be dropped. Carrick has to play. The only English player in this generation who can play that deep playmaking role. I personally also think Joe Cole should play on the wing or even in central midfield to make a 3 man midfield with carrick/lampard/cole, dropping lampard with gerrard playing just behind Rooney. or playing barry, carrick, lampard behind gerrard, rooney, cole.

I don't get this. Isn't assuming we are going through to the next round a positive way of looking at things?

For me, it's the poorest performance from England in the finals since 1986 against Morocco. With Robson and Wilkins out, Sir Bobby HAD to change things around and Lineker was unleashed.

This time I see a poorer squad, have had serious doubts about England's ability to progress.

I believe England has been rather overhyped, people say they are great players, but maybe they are hyped, and also the fact that they are surrounded by great 'overseas' players at their clubs.

Rooney is talented, but isn't getting the service which he has enjoyed at United. Lampard shoots for fun at Chelsea from distance, but for England ..... Johnson's positional play worries me an awful lot. Lennon .... haven't seen him yet. I could go on.

For the fun of it, I'll pick the following as my team for the Slovenia game.

James

Johnson (got nobody else!)
Dawson
Terry
A.Cole

J.Cole
Lampard
Barry
Lennon

Gerrard

Rooney

4-4-1-1

and just prey that Cole can stretch Slovenia and get some crosses in. It's a shame that Capello doesn't like certain players.

But ultimately England doesn't have the ability or perhaps will, to progress far in this tournament.

Disappointing. Very disappointing. And they just don't seem hungry enough.

I agree with all this, including the starting 11 for the next game.

Capello is certainly stubborn, but surely he has to play Joe Cole? And what is with the obsession with bringing SWP on? He is awful. No skill at all, he just runs straight into players. Mad

The problem isn't the quality of players or the strategy, the problem is mental. They look like they've given up already. Two games when they were clearly the stronger team but they just lacked desire.

I have to disagree.

This whole "we could win it all if we actually tried" excuse is getting really REALLY old now. I think it is time to just accept that English players, without the support of other world class superstars, are just plain mediocre and slow so it IS a question of talent. They aren't bad but they certainly aren't very good unless they have a stacked team of world class talent to play with. The English media has constantly overhyped the English team for decades now and this world cup shows that it is time to wake up and smell the coffee beans. England is at best a 2nd/probably 3rd class team. The results speak for themselves. English fans should rejoice if they make it out of their group with the current level of talent they have.
