I called my parents this morning (to keep in touch and whatnot) and found out that the family dog suddenly died a couple days ago. He was only five, and he appeared to be quite healthy, but he just dropped dead while my parents were at work, apparently from a heart attack.

I've only been in Korea for just over a week, and I feel responsible for the dog's death. The dog was very bonded with me, so I feel my departure for Korea was too much for his little heart to handle. I know I shouldn't think that way and that the dog likely would've died even if I was there, but still. . .

I'm only posting about this here because I don't know who else to talk to, as I don't know many people here yet. I'm feeling pretty depressed right now.

Has anyone else here had to deal with the loss of a pet or person from back home while living in Korea or another far away country?

My dog died less than a month after I moved here. I'm sorry to hear about your loss. The roughest part was visiting home last month and not seeing his beds around the house, nor his toys scattered everywhere.

You may want to get a pet whilst here. Rodents live for 2 years on average. I got 2 male rats. One is frigging awesome and plays games with me and snuggles. The other's a jackass. When I do leave, I'll try to take them with me, no matter the cost. If it's not possible without ridiculous quarantine, I'll give them to my friend, who's already agreed to keep them if it comes down to it.

What was your dog like? Did it do any nifty tricks?

My dog died back in '08 when I was living here. I'm sorry for your loss, I know how you feel.

There is such a thing as broken heart over loss of something that means a lot. Sorry.

Death is inevitable...everyone reacts differently...some wail for show and some wail because they mean it. Others are more emotional and some show no emotional....I take the approach...it's done, get over it and get on with my life or else it will make me a wreck. But I never forget.
I have had my dog for 14 years....got him before he was born! And I know I'll be deeply hurt when he passes....animals are better than people sometimes!

I had a dog once. He didnt die. My parants sent him to a nice farm where he could run and play all day with the other doggies.
