And I concede that I am a fan of the food partially because the Mexican and Chinese food here blows, and one has to have a car and drive out to the suburbs for good Korean and Vietnamese food. So yeah, if you want affordable, decent ethnic food, Ethiopian is basically all you got (and maybe some ok Thai places).

3. Best ethiopian food in the USA.

Quite the cuisine that is, green gunk that you scoop up with your bare hands. Pretty bizarre too that the only people I've met that like it are liberal Americans and Ethiopians. Not taking a dig here, just something I've noticed.

Well I have yet to meet a person around that doesn't like Ethiopian but then again almost everyone who lives in DC proper is a liberal.

And green gunk? That describes one or two dishes, that's about it.

Earth colored paste? Some of lamest crap I've ever tasted

I don't want to argue about something as inane as food, African grub at that - I am, however, in Africa now, and I can guarantee you that if you had to tell someone here, or any other African country for that matter, that you like Ethiopian food they'd look at you as though you were nuts - it seems to be an American thing, this liking of Ethiopian food. That is all. No conflict wanted, just saying.

Each to his/her own. I personally would take Ethiopian over West African food any day. Haven't really had any other sub-saharan African food. And sure, any other African might look at you like you're nuts because they probably have no experience with Ethiopian food and would assume it would be crap given how poor the country is.

Just curious: what African countries are known for their food?

What's all this about African food?

I thought it was famous for not having food.

That said I quite like fare from Morroco.

It is an American thing. I don't know why. Somewhere there is a marketing agent who did something that went viral. It's a fine enough cuisine (or at least at SWPL restaurants in the American Hipster cities it is) but not worth the hype. Haitian food has a similar rep.

What about Albuquerque (1 million pop.)? Smile Last year it ranked #1 in the USA, I think according to US News or some major news magazine.

I lived in ABQ for a year. I've lived in four different parts of the US and think the southwest/new mexico is the greatest

EXCEPT:
The job market is horrid - ABQ is really blue collar and it's tough for an "outsider" to get connected in NM. Santa Fe is great, lots of cool people from all over the US but if you're posting on Dave's you can't afford to live in Santa Fe! Cool

living in europe has its perks. i am from germany and ive got to say duesseldorf is nice. however, frankfurt is the city with the highest crime rate and i wouldnt wanna live there.
then again, i wouldnt wanna live in germany, if the rest of the world is available to me. survey or no survey.

as for auckland (#4), its just boring to live there. vacation, yeah. backpacking nz, definatley. living, a big NO NO! i did that and after 6 months i couldnt bare it anymore and moved somewhere else.
most of the students leave after graduating university and work somewhere else in the world. theres a huge age gap between 21 and 40.
its super expensive there, too.
didnt enjoy it much.
