Yeah, that was the weirdest thing...trying to explain to a Korean friend that her new favourite song was originally a movie about a flying car...

And not just any movie - my favourite childhood movie!

I just want to know what kind of mind hears "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" and thinks "This is perfect for a pop song!" That is an original mind.

As long as she still looks this hot, I don't care if she sings the lyrics of Bob Marley to the melodies of the Doors. Better yet, just switch off the mic and let her dance around.

To be fair to Lee Hyori, she hasn't done anything wrong. Like almost all other pop groups all over the world, she's just a mouth piece, sorta like a human tape recorder. She just sings what she is told to sing.

Her management hired some sketchy gyopos to pen some songs and they basically ripped off some Canadian/European pop acts. The management probably should hired better writers/producers.

I guess back in the old days before youtube/internet and when Korea was still a hermit kingdom, it was easier to get away with it.

Because there was no creativity in any of those areas, right? Are you a big Korean literature reader? How about fashion?

No where in any of those categories was there creativity??

Come on, give me a break. Delve into the culture a bit and you'll find originality all over the place.

I concur with CC, young people are overflowing with it.

I wish it extended to screening foreigners better who come over here ostensibly to teach English.

http://www.yourdictionary.com/answers/who/who-invented-the-mp3-player.html

According to that source, Korea didn't make the first MP3 player. They made the first solid-state MP3 player though.

Don't get butthurt because someone says Korea isn't very original/creative. They didn't say everything about Korea sucks. What IS creative and/or original here? If someone listed stuff, I'd be interested in checking those things/places out.

That's not what they said.
They didn't say 'very', they simply said that Koreans are not creative. There are around 80 millions Koreans on this peninsula, not to mention the massive diaspora around the globe. And for someone to make a sweeping generality about all of those millions of people - that's offensive.

What is creative anywhere? Any example we give could be easily listed as a copy or similar to something else in the world. The truth is that the vast majority of posters on this forum do not associate with adult Koreans in normal contexts. They do not attend art shows, poetry readings, or performances. If you did, you'd realize that there are at least a couple of Koreans who manage to muster some creativity.

I attend art shows, music concerts, festivals, and I'm still waiting for your example.

Not to say these things aren't nice, but it doesn't put Korea on top over Japan or China- countries that effectively market their cultural assets to the world.

I'm sorry, I think I've made a mistake then. I objected to the statement 'Koreans are not creative/original'

I have no interest in arguing which society is more creative than the other... although I'd be interested in reading it.

I simply thought that fortysixyou's comment on the first page stepped over the line.
