I'm going to Daegu with a friend this weekend, and my research on what to do has left me with lots of questions. If you live(d) there or know the area well, I'd appreciate any help you have to offer:
1. From my research, I see that there are several nightlife areas: downtown, Kyungpook Nat'l University, Suseong-gu, Siji in east Daegu, Apsan, etc. Are there more areas? What makes them all distinct from each other? I can probably only go to one, so I'd like to make an informed decision.
2. As one of my hobbies is the Korean War, I understand the Rhee Syngman government fled to Daegu for safety at that time. Is the place they stayed and governed a tourist spot?
3. According to my '04 Lonely Planet, jagalmadang is one of the biggest red light districts in Korea. Purely for the purpose of window shopping (honestly), I'd like to check it out. Is it still there?
4. I'd like to splurge on Sunday brunch. Does the Hotel Inter Burgo have a good one? Any pricing information?
5. Is Daegu Nat'l Museum worth visiting?
Besides these five, is there anything else worth seeing and doing in Daegu? I'll continue to research but could always use another opinion... |

Been here going on 3 years, so I'll try to help out.
1. The biggest nightlife area is downtown. A lot of clubs, foreigner bars. My personal recommendation, however, is Sugar Joe's by Kyungpook U. Great live music, and a little more "veteran" crowd. By veteran, I mean been in Korea awhile, not old. Almost strictly ESL teachers, rarely get any military. Also the only bar I know of in Daegu with an open roof. I used to live in Siji, and while there is a large foreign population, there is absolutely nothing to do there. They all head elsewhere on the weekends. Plus, it's way on the outskirts of town. Downtown and KNU are really the only nightlife options, and to decide which of those to choose depends on your personality.
2. If there's anything left of that, it would be the first I heard of it.
3. There's a redlight district somewhere near Daegu Station (NOT the KTX station). I heard there's another, but no idea where it is.
4. I don't know anyone who has done the Inter-Burgo brunch, most people head to Holy Grill. Not really my thing, since any decent cook can make their entire menu with a membership to Costco, but it is popular.
5. Not really.
Other than that, the markets are pretty good, and there are a couple real nice temples, but those are just outside of town. If you want to see history, you'd be better off to head just down the road for the afternoon to Gyeongju. |

1. The only pub/club area favorable to foreigners would be downtown. The university areas are nothing more than Soju hofs on the whole.
Tell any taxi driver to take you to Sam Duk SoBangSuh. Once there, you will see a Family Mart. Walk up the street next to the Family Mart. Take your first left. The street is lined with clubs.
2. I have a few connections at city hall. I'll add another reply if there is something to report. But, from what I know, there is nothing.
3. Chagalmadang is closed to foreigners now. Years back we were able to walk around for a look, but last year I tried taking some friends in for a peek, and oddly enough, police were stationed at the front entrance of this illegal establishment and wouldn't let us in. It is approximately one kilometer west of Daegu Station. Not, Dongdaegu Station.
4. Inter Burgo's brunch is fantastic, but it will gouge a 50,000won dent in your wallet.
5. Not really.
There are bike tours starting the from the downtown core (DongSungNo street). They are free, I believe. You just sit, and someone peddles the bike. You get some history of the downtown area. Infor at the Tourist info booth at the train station or DongSungNo street.
Apsan Park has a cable car that will take you to a nice lookout of the city.
Woobang Tower Land is an amusement park near downtown. Spa Valley is a Waterpark on the city limits. Forget those places on weekends though.
Cue another poster to recommend The Holy Grill for overpriced fried food drowning in sauce. |

I disagree with the previous poster about downtown being the ONLY place to go. A large number of our expat community spend their weekends in the KNU area, and it is much more than just soju hofs.
Other than that, his post was pretty spot-on. |

Suseong-Gu had a few nice HOFs. The red light area was close to Keungogae. Hated getting hassled by the adjuma while walking home after returning from Busan (KTX). |

That wasn't the red light area. That was a stretch of street walkers.
Chagalmadang is a wacky place. Blocks of shops with floor to ceiling windows so you can window shop.
The girls all sit on the floor in various colored wedding dresses, looking bored, text messaging, and primping in mirrors. |

Ehhh... I'd have to agree with the other poster as well. The university areas are nice for a laid back drink during the week, but there is nothing exciting to be found in Kyungpook or Keimyung. Don't get me wrong, they are nice enough, but not somewhere I would recommend to someone visiting for a weekend. Besides 2 or 3 western style bars, it's mostly just hofs and random cafes. Keimyung is a bit bigger, but it's the same schtick. Nothing exciting on the weekend. |

The Novotel might have a decent brunch spread going on. |

The National Museum is undergoing renovation right now and a good 80% of it is closed. It is not really worth it normally and definitely a waste of time right now.
I would definitely go up Apsan or Palgonsan to escape the heat. Palgong has Gatbawi and a nice temple. If you are into the Korean War Apsan mountain there is the river battle museum but it is very small, not a destination on its own.
If you are here this weekend the Musical Festival is going on if you are into that kind of thing. There are a bunch of musicals in different venues, the Korean ones have English subtitles. I saw a crazy Korean musical about young men doing their army service last week, well worth 10,000 won to see a bboy singing about banana milk. |
