So I came to work today to find that my school, Langcon, blocked facebook from all the teachers computers. This really sucks because most of the time here none of us have anything to do and it is nice to be able to talk to friends back home at these times. Further more it's just all together stupid. I'm on other websites ten times more often than facebook.
In the teachers office there are 13 computers and two of them, one which is the head Korean teacher and the other not used for teachers, are able to go on facebook. So that makes me think that a firewall or something was put on the computers to block the site. However, I was also told that this was done through all of Langcon.
I have tried a proxy server and I was able to get through to facebook but I was not able to use the chat or post anything.
Does anyone know how I would be able to get facebook back on my computer?

if 2 machines in the room can use it and a few can't, it probably means it's a filter based on IP address.
They either created a blanket rule and exempted those 2 machines or they created a rule just for those 11 machines.

In either situation you can get around it. If they haven't locked the machines down, change the ip address, you can google instructions depending on windows version for viewing and changing IP address. Easiest solution is to check what the address is on the free machine that works, change it, and then put that address on your machine that you usually use.

That is said without knowing exactly what the back-end is, but it is unlikely to be too complicated with multiple subnets, routers, switches, etc for just 1 room.

every public school in my town (gwangmyeong) blocks facebook now too (along with a few other sites). Allegedly, there was a korean co-teacher meeting where they chastised FT's about using facebook at the office. Nevermind the fact that they have full access to cyworld and whatever garbage sites they use. Needless to say, i wasn't happy about it either.

Anyways, i found this proxy to be rather useful:

You can download it and use it from a USB if needed as well. It comes with a mobile version of firefox which will let you browse, chat, and post on facebook. (only restriction i was able to find was watching facebook based videos)

Why does one need to use company equipment for personal reasons. If you want to use Facebook and other garbage, do it at home.

Personally, I think that the amount of time people waste at work is a shame. I think that I could have written 2 dissertations in the span of one year that most teachers waste on facebook.

I second the break period comment. Lunchtime is time to catch up with correspondence. It doesn't take an hour to eat a sandwich or some soup and rice. Considering my internet has been spotty borrowed wifi since my move (the internet guy is coming tomorrow to set it up), if my school blocked FB, I'd leave for lunch and hit a PC room.

I'm guessing that you don't bring your own personal computer to school? The reason I bring it up is because you can have the proxy on your personal computer and no one can track your website history (sure, you can clear it, but it looks fishy when someone sees you on a computer for 30 minutes and then there is *nothing* in the cache).

I would bring my own laptop to school, but may I suggest emailing? I find it can be a lot more personal than Facebook. Then again, I hate seeing all of the status updates my "friends" make like, "goodnight!" as if they have to broadcast it to the world.

OP, I understand your situation, but if the school thinks you and your co-teachers are spending too much time on FB, they might have blocked it for that reason. Just sayin'. My job here in the US doesn't allow us to be on FB during work hours.

The school owns the computers, they have a right to decide what they can be used for. Facebook is not a right...it is a social network tool....read: personnal and on your own time.
