Ok...
Historically the host nations have done very well, to most peoples surprise but seriously, South Africa drawing with Mexico and beating France?! I am over the moon about the results having grown up in Pretoria and supporting all SA sporting teams, but come one nowwere the French really outplayed or did they hold back for a fat pay check, please the local crowd and continue the proliferation of football development in impoverished nations? Ummyeah.

Id like some of the soccer/football analysts (you know who you are; you provide commentary on every single aspect of the match, even the seemingly trivial) to tell me if you think it is possible that a team can decide the outcome of a match by playing poorly on purposethe ref being biased is another story, and always noticeable.

I did post the same query on an actual football forum and got bombarded with a plethora of innate ramblings =(

The French played a horrible game.

End of story.

No it's not rigged or South Africa would have gone through. France were as good as out and playing only for pride which they haven't had all tournament, though strangely in this game they had more of a go. The French sending off was maybe a bit harsh, but I've seen players sent off for less. France defended badly for both goals, but there was no sign of throwing the game, just errors, the same as they made against Uruguay. S.Africa played OK, maybe if France had kept 11 men on the field you wouldn't have won, after he went S.Africa weren't really troubled defensively just couldn't create enough chances, French keeper made a couple of good saves and I saw the French left back railing at Henry for not tracking back early in the 2nd half so they were definitely playing.
I can only think of 2 dodgy world cup games, Austria and West Germany scheeming a 1-0 win in 82 that put them both through at the expense of Algeria and a very dodgy 1978 Peru goalkeeper (of argentinian birth) conceding 6 terrible goals against Argentina when the Argies had to win 4-0 to get to progress.
I do not believe the Korea games were fixed in 2002, despite what the Portuguese, Italians and Spanish say.

I think it would be near impossible to persuade these players to fix games, it's the biggest competition they'll ever play in and often they only get to play in 1 or 2 in their career. A referee from the seychelles however..maybe.

who cares. It seems to be a joke. France quits, no oversight to the officiating. The focus of the game seems to be to fall down and act as if you were tripped. run 20 seconds, fall, run 10 seconds fall very exciting watching people fall down. Of course the occasional gambling scandal! Fall down, what a skill set. enjoy whatever this is but it is not a sport.

of course, that's why it's the most popular sport in the world, people the world over no matter what race, religion or sex love to run and fall over, it's a fantastic feeling as your face hits the asphalt, you should give it a go

The world cup as a whole probably can't be fixed. Individual matches where the result is good for both teams..collusion happens all the time (especially in Italy) in this situation. that was why i was very surprised that Uruguay and Mexico finished in a win for Uruguay. A draw suited both teams. I don't know why anyone would fix SA and France. They were both almost certainly out regardless of result.

Yeah, it's rigged so the host nation fails to make it through the first round for the first time in history.

A very typical and unconvincing response. Who cares if it is popular or not? Does that really make it good? The most popular show of all time is Baywatch. Must be a great show.

And from what I've seen, the players seem to be falling on grass, not asphalt.

Look for ties in games where both teams have huge followings and are among the favorites to advance. If there are a lot of ties in these games then the gamblers have it rigged. Hasnt there been years of scandals about some players and teams close association with gambling? Seems the italians have a team of players who have links to gamblers.

Falling over is traditionally learnt as a child when playing street football, every footballer remembers their first 'falling over' in the street, often on asphalt, if you were lucky maybe dirt, only the best 'fallers' of a generation get the pleasure of falling over on manicured pitches. Granted, popular does not make anything good, often it's shit, so I'll change my phrasing and say that it's the most played sport in the world because it incorporates team work and the ability to fall over.
I'd also like to draw attention to the unheralded work of the trippers too, or as they are known in Latin America 'los triperos', those gifted individuals who assist the fallers. For every great fall, there is usually a terrific trip behind it. Let us not forget the stirling work of perhaps the greatest tripper of them all Andoni Goikoetxea aka The Butcher of Bilbao, who in tripping perhaps the greatest faller of them all Maradona managed to break his ankle.
