Here's a link to a blog that debunks the true nature of this so-called seminar that all hagwons teachers are required to attend in Daegu and possibly other cities:

Basically, the blogger explains that the seminar is going to be used as an ambush to make us dirty foreigners ashamed that some of our brethren are rapists and pedophiles.
Whether or not this blog is 100% factual and legitimate is unknown to me, but at least its worth something to think about and discuss. |

Everyone attending should wear Virginia Tech T-shirts. For added effect, have "I AM NOT DAVID NAM" printed on the back in Korean. If you really want to have fun with it, have one of the following slogans instead:
- I didn't forge my degree in art.
- I'm not a hagweon owner--I do honor my obligations.
- I've never taken a bribe. Guess that means I'm not in the 국회!
- My degree is from the US. It's recognized everywhere. What about yours?
Feel free to add to the list. Of course, all of these should be in Korean. |

| The seminar in Seoul on the 19th was brought up on a few threads last week. But, when bumping them up to try and get information about what they talked about, nobody responded. I don't know if there's any evidence to suggest these seminars will be about dirty foreigners and sex crimes, but then again I guess you can't put anything past hagwon operators. There has already been sessions in Jeonju and Seoul, but nobody who attended has talked about what happened. |

You want to discuss if hypothetically this seminar is going to be used to trash foreigners?
How about you go first and see what the subject matter is, and if it is then you can discuss it.
Crazy idea I know.
Also this whole "koreans think we are demons" indignation is getting a little old. Some teachers come here to drink, party, have sex with Korean girls, and some are quilty of molesting students etc.
This happens in every country when minority groups come to the country and start breaking laws.
In my country they are ticked off at Asians for all of the Asian street gangs.
They don't want ALL of us out, but they sure want the less than desirable, and many of the illegal ones who they can't regulate out, just like people in any country would. |

The topic at the Seoul seminar was actually how to spot signs of abuse in kids and where to report it (and was probably the most informative part of the whole thing). No demonization of foreign teachers involved.
That being said, what a waste of a morning. |

The problem is that we aren't forming street gangs and committing crimes. There are a few idiots here, but by no means are foreigners committing any more crimes than Koreans. Also, it is not foreigners that have been arrested for molesting children or beating children or taking bribes or covering up for a principal that was molesting students and then getting a promotion after said cover-up.
I see what you are saying, but there is just no proof that foreigners are committing crimes at a higher rate than Koreans(other then drugs possibly, not that that is a good thing). |

If ANY of us are molesting children thats a cause for concern for them. We are guests in this country and yes we will be under the public eye more than the Koreans are.
Are the Koreans doing it too, yep, more than us, yep, is it ignorant to single us out, yep
Is it fair, nope. Is it thier right to treat us this way, yep, It's their country and we are guests in it.
If I get the odd seminar thats basically insulting for the good job and benefits I enjoy from over reactins to political agendas, so be it.
I am not tryng to defend the position, I am simply saying it doesnt concern me all that much |

The reason people are being a little flippant about it is because there have been some fairly nasty and misleading stories in the Korean media the past few years. There was even a leader of a Korean teacher's union that put out a statement which made some bold accusations.
That being said, I agree it's their country and they should be concerned. I think sometimes foreign teachers are typecast as a one size fits all though. |

Yeah granted, I simply call this reality.
There is no truth in the news media there is simply get it out there, get it out fast, who cares about the facts as long as its entertaining. A couple decades ago the media was actually worth a damn. NOw they can print lies, half truths, innuendos etc, pass them off as facts with impunity.
In the end we all know its a bunch of cranky cranks, most of us are law adbiding good people, and we are not likelyo to be sent out without cause |
