Big county... It would LARGELY depend on WHERE you end up.

I went to Hwaseong recently for a school picnic. ttompatz is right, it is pretty big. It is technically a city I think, but to me it looked more like a collection of small villages. According to Wikipedia:

Quote:
It has the largest area of farmland of any city or county in Gyeonggi province

The parts of Hwaseong I saw were indeed very rural, lots and lots of rice paddies. If your job is public school, you might want to make sure you don't end up on Jebudo "island", where you can only leave when the tide's out (seriously!). When I went to Jebudo and saw the school there I couldn't help but wonder about the foreign teacher who works there. Jebudo is beautiful though, and I bet you can get some great seafood there.

I saw a few other public schools on the mainland that were surrounded by farms. I imagine most hagwons would be closer to civilization.

If you want see a city, I think you can take a bus to Suwon from Hwaseong. Good luck getting to Seoul though, unless you'll be living near Hwaseong station.

I second ttompatz's advice to find out exactly where in Hwaseong you'll be living.

Hwaseong is huge. Dongtan New Town and Bongdam are effectively in Suwon, the rest is mostly rice paddies. As I recall there's a SE Asian food mart in Namyang, where the city hall is. Other than that, there's not much of interest. Find out where you'll be.

Hwaseong has the distinction of being "무서운도시" (scary city) by many Koreans I've talked to.....especially women. I've heard many women have been raped there and some murders have went down there.
