Hey,

I've been teaching a Media English class at my uni during the last few vacations. I usually use a couple of songs, cartoons, tv shows, a movie, newspaper stories etc.

I've been using the same material and it's not only getting boring for me, I think I might have some repeat students this year.

Material I've used in the past include: The Simpsons, Futurama, Family Guy, Desperate Housewives, Dexter, Team America, Ratatouille, Arrested Development and others that I can't think of right now (Brain fried today).

So, I'm putting out an SOS for ideas on what I should include.
All material should be fairly family friendly. Adult themes are OK, but I'd prefer avoid swearwords and sex scenes if possible.
Songs should have distinct voices, and if there is a theme/message or possible grammar point to the song, so much the better.
TV / animation / Movies anything goes as far as genre. Something that is readily downloadable with subtitles is much preferred.

I need to fill 20 x 80 minute lessons, so I'm taking any ideas I can get.

Thanks in advance.

show them older classics- they'll really like the original Dark Knight.

the English is spoken rather slowly, and pronounced clearly. 'Cept by that damn Riddler.... Evil or Very Mad

make sure to ask them if there was anything wrong with a guy named Bruce living with a boy named Dick, and running around at night in costumes with masks and capes.... Wink

You could do quite a few classes on advertising literacy.
Build a vocabulary of advertising terms, dissect a number of advertisements from various media (tv commercials, magazines, bus ads and billboards)

Talk about what the ads wnat you to think/buy, are they effective?
then have students create their own advertisements and present them to the class.

Other classes could focus on different media, for example radio dramas.
Have the students listen to and practice radio drama scripts (anything from old buck rogers/green hornet, to newer stuff)
Then you could have students write their own radio dramas, and perform or record them for grading.

P.S. I also want to add, The original Karate Kid and a lot of the John Hughes '80s movies are a goldmine too. if you just stick to movies/TV

The First season of "Lost" contains lots of simple English with actions that support the language used. For example there's a sick man shouting" She's dangerous then a quick flash of Kates Mugg Shots.
There's another scene where Locke talks about Backgamon he takes about two sides two colors One black one white.
Really EFL friendly.

Is designing a full-on movie poster a good idea for that age group? I know it'll work with the younger set.

I used 'News of the World' by The Jam to teach my 3rd grade middle schoolers about the news media. It was a bit hit and miss, but I think it could work with uni students.

It totally is. Creative assignments are good for all ages because you can scale the difficulty and grading, also account for a presentation where the students must explain the stylistic choices they made.
