Hi,
So I got my acceptance last night and will be receiving my date of appointment, visa # and contract. I was also told that I will be placed in Daejeon, which was my third choice. Therefore, I am going to have to get a lot of literature on the city. However, if any of you live in Daejon or have lived there, I would like to here your opinions on it in regards to safety (and because I am a woman, I have to be extra safe ...), transportation, areas of attraction, people, shopping, et cetera. My recruiter told me that there is a lot of nature there, which I like. And judging by the pictures, it looks like it is pretty more laid back than cities like Seoul or Incheon.
Thanks! |

Hi There,
I am in Daejeon at the moment. In terms of safety it has been ok except for a few pesky taxi drivers if you stay out late. There is a subway. Not many point of attraction except Dong hak temple and yuseoung hot spring. There is a currency museum and also a science museum. It pays to explore. There are ore two downtowns, Dun san and Eun heang dong. Winters are pretty cold and summers are hot so air conditioning will help.
Compared to other areas of Korea is is quite calm and simple. Facilities are improving but at the same time those needing a good variety of western food might not choose this city. There are a few places for simple italian.
It is a little bit traditional compared to others however things are changing here quickly also and it grows on you. The train and transport are quite convenient. Shopping for clothing is a touch more expensive then Seoul but still available. Two Emarts and two Homepluses are here.
Check your location in regard to the busy areas of Dunsan and Eun heang dong, since some people don't enjoy having to travel too far into the city area. Wolpyeong dong is also not bad and Gung dong or yuseong is a busy and more international area near the university where teachers and students go out.
I do find the life here pretty relaxing, sometimes prompting me to hit Seoul or pusan via train on the weekend. If too many people leave too it can be a quiet nightlife. There is a new bar called yellow taxi in Dunsan. |

Lived in Daejeon last year, now I'm in Seoul.
Daejeon is a simple town with simple people. Don't expect to bump into anyone that speaks english.
Daejeon has nice parks by the river. Expo park, expo bridge, the giant lot next to Daejeon hall is probably full of bikers and rollerbladers these days.
Daejeon bars are ok, since you are a girl you should have a good experience.
Korean culture places a high emphasis on beauty here. Some girls complain that they feel alienated or shunned by the men because of the quality of the local product. I don't know what you look like, but I guess it's whatever.
I hope you are not working for Kids College, they fired me on the 10th month. The labor office is a 10 minute walk from Dunsan. I know from experience
Anyways, good luck. |
