In a word - balls. Germany in the next round and then if we manage to get out of that alive the Argies will likely be next. If they intend on performing well at all they might wanna think about it soon. USA have screwed us over! |

| I never followed the WC before 2002 and that was because I was here when it was hosted, so I don't know much about the WC, but for those of you who do: Is it unusual or surprising to see the Americas do this well? The Americas send 8 teams to WC and 7 of them (all but Honduras) have advanced to the knockouts. |

South America is covered by CONMEBOL. 10 countries and 4.5 of the 10 teams are in the World Cup. These countries have a history of football excellence. All the World Cups held outside of Europe have been won by a country in South America. Brazil and Argentina are the class of the region, but the other countries have given both teams scares in qualifying.
North America, Caribbean and Central America is in CONCACAF. This region covers Canada and all the countries down to Panama. Usually have 3.5 teams alloted to the World Cup. Traditionally Mexico was the only decent team in this region. But in the last 10 years the USA have shown their strength. 1994 they qualified for the knock-stages, 2002 they made it to the quarter-finals. However I don't see the USA winning a World Cup anytime soon. Mexico probably has a better chance than the US, but even Mexico is a long shot in winning a World Cup. |

Well, when I said I didn't know much about the WC, I didn't mean I knew nothing. I know about conmenol and concacaf. I certainly know that Brazil and Argentina are almost always good, but in this WC, even Chile, Paraguay, the US are advancing while traditional European teams like Italy and France are not. It's one thing to have a couple dominant teams (like Brazil) but this WC the whole New World is doing well.

As a Brazilian friend said to me once, there are no easy teams in South America. All are good, Brazil and Argentina are always contenders and the others have outside chances of winning.
For some weird reason European teams have a history of doing lousy outside of Europe. In 2002 France and Portugal didn't make it into the next round. Some of the talking heads on the sports channel claim things like unfamiliar surroundings, climate, time change, etc. I think it's unfamiliar surroundings, I think European players don't like playing in non-European countries. The insects and smells might be different or something. |

...and thats a 4-0 hiding for Argentina.
Can't say I'm sad to see them go. I am surprised they were so outclassed, but they had that cold, clinical German control to deal with^^. |

I never saw "Germany" playing anything remotely resembling soccer.
How could I? Faced with the choice of watching the WC & watching paint dry, I chose the latter because I needed a "pick-me-upper." |
