|
|
So after reading that S. Korea has some of the fastest internet speeds, I can't wait to get over there and check it out.
With regard to the housing provided by EPIK, the utilities (including internet) aren't included, correct?
When you sign up for internet, do they provide a wi-fi router as well? My guess is that they would provide a modem/wireless router combo, but could someone please clarify for me?
If it matters at all, odds are we'll be in Seoul...
Thanks! |

You will need to purchase the wireless router separately. Some of the companies might be able to sell you one, but imo, if you expect to need one, bring it from the states so your install CD and controls are in English. |

Correct, cable, utilities, internet and other building fees are NOT included - you pay for them yourself.
Depending on the building there may not be anything other than a network connection in the wall (place is already networked). It will be a wired connection.
If they do install anything (like a a/v/DSL/cable modem) it won't be wireless.
If you want a wireless router you will have go get your own.

How much would a decent N router cost over there?
Would you advise purchasing here in the States before coming over?
I would like to lighten my load as much as possible rather than bringing over everything and the kitchen sink. |

Your room will likely have a DSL cable that you can plug in. Cost 0. The rooms are so small a cable worked out fine for me. I did not feel the need for WiFi
If you really need a wifi router, the costs are likely about the same as you would pay in your home country. |

Wireless router = 50k and up. Problem with bringing one from the States/Canada is your power supply for it. Make sure the PS can handle 240VAC input or you will be adding a power transformer to your list as well).
5 meters of cat5 (LAN) cable = 3k.
Your internet connection should cost you about 30-40k won for VDSL (100mbs) or FDDH (gigabit) and as little as 10-15k for a cableTV/internet package (2-4mbs).
There are no bandwidth limitations or surcharges other than the limit of the technology itself.

You can get a router for about 40k at Costco (per my friend). I ended up paying 70k from my internet guy because I'd broken my ethernet port and needed a quick fix.
How did I break my ethernet port? I tripped over the cord.
I recommend the router for that reason |

We have a wi-fi router. It costs us an extra 1,000 won on our bill. The guy who installed our internet didn't want to give us Wi-Fi, because wi-fi is so much slower than the wired internet, he said. I don't find there's that much of a difference, really. |

wifi is limited to 54mbs or less depending on distance from your router and electrical signal interference from other appliances in the room/area.
If you are on VDSL (100mbs) or FDDH (1000mbs) then wifi (54mbs) is a LOT slower.

I will probably choose to go the ethernet route, but since I'm coming over with the wifey, we will either need to go with a standard 4 port router or a wireless router w/ 4ports.
Thanks to everyone for the responses regarding the cost! May just be a better idea to get it once we get there to find out how the room is configured.
I've seen some apartments that look more like lofts and if we were to get one of those, the wired scenario wouldn't work so well. I'm thinking we'll probably go wireless, but who knows? |

Yes, you are right... of course. I guess I just don't use the wi-fi for anything other than browsing the web, so I don't notice much. |
