Hi There
I have secured a job in a publc school through the EPIK programme. I am just wondering what is the required dress code? I'm assuming slacks and a shirt(business casual)..Would this be correct? or can you wear something more casual? |

That's fine, but more casual than that would be pushing it.
It wouldn't be a bad thing to wear a proper suit the first week or so. You don't have to, but appearance is everything in Korea.
Make them think you're serious in the first week or so, and you'll have a much better time of it for the rest of the year. People are very into first impressions here so do it up if it's an option.
I work in a uni and I always start the semester wearing a full suit and tie. I sometimes lose the tie as time goes on. And at the end of the first semester (June) when it's getting hot I tend to lose the jacket. For exams or the annual meeting I still wear the full suit.
Personally, I like wearing a suit so it's not a big thing for me. I'm given to understand that other people hate wearing suits so they do what they do.
In a public school I'd definitely stay away from wearing shorts. |

You're welcome
In general, dress extra-nice the first week. After that, follow what the other male teachers do. Except the PE teacher. Your slacks and shirt idea will be about right. |

For a PS, shirt and slacks are fine for most of the year.
During camps you can get away with a golf shirt and pants or even jeans.
You will want a track suit for sports days and field trips.
You will need a few ties for those days when "guests" are expected and there may be a few days when, if you have it available, a suit would not be out of place.

I am a recent Uni Grad and in the process of buying real world clothing and I was wondering what exactly do you mean by shirt and slacks?
Is that like a golf shirt with khakis? |

I wore a suit my first couple weeks, but I was told I didn't have to wear a suit by my co-teacher, I can be more casual. So I dressed down more and more...now I wear jeans, sometimes a T-shirt, and no one seems to care. Probably depends on what school you're at. |

I started off wearing a button down, tie and nice pressed dress slacks. After awhile I lost the tie (but always keep one in a drawer for those unexpected visits from the higher-ups).
Yesterday I wore cargo pants and my US Soccer jersey (both something I would never wear if it wasn't World Cup time). Of course there were a lot of bigwigs that showed up and I just said "Korea fighting!" when I met them and they seemed quite happy. |

Only if you enjoy dressing up when you go to work. The male teachers in my school usually wear dress pants and jackets--too constricting for the way I like to teach my elementary classes. I've come to school in jeans and a polo shirt, track pants and a t-shirt, untucked silk shirt and chinos, sweatshirt and trackpants, baseball cap and jeans with a heavy metal T-shirt (everything was good quality and clean). I've never had a problem--and I eat lunch everyday with the principal and vice-principal, too.
But for the first week, dress up a little. Also check out the dress-culture in your school. Your co-teachers may be able to enlighten you. They encouraged me to dress down during my first week--well over a year ago now. Does your principal and vice-p really care? That's important. |

Khaki and golf shirts are fine in warm weather with long sleeve button down good most other times. No jeans, T-shirts, shorts, and ball caps rule might be a good general dress code. I've seen many other teachers getting by just fine dressing as college students, but I can't see dressing in business attire unless I'm talking important business of some sort.
Do I play on the PGA? Yes, I play it in a virtual screen golf tour near my school. My IZOD and Dockers are perfect attire for such a virtual escape to a virtual reality of the good life. |

i work in a hagwon where all the female korean teachers seem to dress the same as the students: converse shoes, short jean shorts, silly konglish shirts, etc. sometimes i feel over dressed in khakis and an oxford.[/list] |
