If you're not teaching in Korea, this poll is not for you. Don't complain I didn't give you an option.

Explanations:

(1) Is for those desperate folk who could NOT get a job back home. You can also check this box if you initially came here for option number 2, then went home and failed to get a job, and are now currently back here because you have nothing else going on.

(2) Is for people who just wanted to do something different before worrying about their life in their home country. They might think paying off some student loans before trying to get a job is a good thing, or they may just have been bored of Hull or Detroit or Christchurch or Townsville or Durban or Saskatoon or Derry. Recent grads with a hankering to travel or pay off loans before hitting the job market.

These are NOT people who have failed to get a job back home. They didn't try yet.

(3), (4) and (5) are self explanatory

6: none of the above.

Came as a guest of a student of mine from back home (where I was teaching) and ended up staying.

After being here for a while I took a job and I stayed here because I liked my job / most of my co-workers and place of residence.

I was comfortable where I was so I saw no reason to leave until immigration made it very clear that, even after many years, I would never be more than a temp worker living from contract to contract.

There is no (6)!! You're an honorary (2) ^^ (It should have also included people who've had jobs but still hadn't settled down..)

And are you back in Korea? You left like 2 years ago, no? I don't mean that in a bad way, your advice is always useful and helpful to many people here!

In and out,,,, Still collecting lots of frequent flier miles.
Not teaching (in Korea) any more.
I do subcontract work and consulting (to schools / POEs) here.

I have my farm and house in the Philippines and work in Thailand for the other 8 months of the year.

The non-existent (6) again -

I wanted language teaching experience and thought that part of it is to understand living in a country where you can barely speak the language, so I know what my students will experience. It's not too different since I still plan to be teaching after and I've no fixed idea about in which country.

OK.

I definitely should have added a "drifter" option.

next time.. next time..

It's just a natural part of a life-long career in teaching English to speakers of other languages.

Once again, none of the above.....

I am a fully-qualified teacher, and I just wanted some ESL experience on my CV. I came to Korea to get it. End of story.

Are you trying to make some sort of point with this poll? You really have far to few options.

I'm guessing the majority of the posters on this board would guess number 1. They don't really like Korea, are miserable, are antisocial and post on Daves all day long.

The people who answer 2,3, 4, and 5 are out enjoying themselves (well, maybe not the married people) and not wasting time MOD EDIT

I'm a solid number 2. I knew even before I started college that I was going to travel after college, and teaching English was the easiest way to do that. Korea pays the best and I didn't know anything about it, so I came. I also am really fed up with American politics these days, and took the conservative "love it or leave it" mantra to heart and got out. I'll do 3 years before all is said and done, though not consecutively and with a lot of travel during and after, then go home and "start" life (or "end" life might be a more accurate description), though I'm not a big fan of "home" so we'll see where I end up.

Number 6 - Money.

The savings potential was much higher than in the UK. I came, I saved, I left.

I came here because of 2. I'm now going to stay one more year for the money to fund my second MA.

(6) None of the Above
Certified Teacher
I was teaching in my home country, great job.
I had also taught outside of my home country before.
I decided it was time to spread my wings again.
I have now been in Korea for 5+ years.

I'm a (6). However, I'm not a drifter. I've been here for 5+ years. My wife and I have our own school/business here. I consider my life as stable.

I came because I don't plan to get a job back home, though I had offers, and decided to visit different countries until I found the one I want to work in permanently. Categorize that!
