Most likely Uruguay will win. There is a reason 4, or 5, of 10 South American teams are in the World Cup. They are all good.

But in a one-game knockout tournament, anything can happen. I hope Korea wins but I think Uruguay is just too good, but it won't be 4-1.

3-2 Uruguay after extra-time.

They are in the Round of 16, Confucian. They probably won't make the final 8 though. Nigeria exposed the Korean defense over and over again in the second half. I didn't want to watch, but my neighbors above were bouncing like crazy and kept me up. Poor finishing was the difference. I think having players like Souza and Forlan will be a little different. I was reading about the team. They have some very good players. A step below Argentina, but so are most other teams.

2-1 Uruguay. I think the Koreans are going to get frustrated and start takning lots of long shots.

By the way, Korea's Elo rankiing is pretty high. I think these rankings seem to be more accurate than Fifa's. They're ranked #23, compared to #47 in Fifa. For perspective:
Argentina - 4 (7)
South Korea - 23 (47)
Greece - 34 (13)
Nigeria - 44 (21)

Uruguay is ranked #11 in Elo, 16 in Fifa. New Zealand is #60 and the USA is #21. Why don't people use these rankings more? The formula seems to be more accurate.

Koreans cite the fifa rankings waaaaaay too much. Always asking me what a team's fifa ranking is, and my response is usually "I have no idea!"

It probably comes from not knowing anything about soccer and trying to find something quick and easy to reference. Also the cultural habit of never questioning authority.

Well, what I meant by Korea's ranking is that a lot of people I think write them off due to being ranked 47th. If you don't know anything about a sport, you check and see who's good. I admit I'm guilty of this. "Well, they're ranked 47th and Greece is ranked 13th, so Greece is cetain to win..." I think a 23rd place ranking is pretty accurate for them. A decent side that will probably challenge for the second round consistantly, but not good enough to win the whole thing.

A friend of mine compared Korea to Mexico. Looks great, good skills, but just not enough.

because I am terribly lonely, hideously ugly and stupefyingly boring. the only reason I am able to drag myself out of bed in the morning is the desire to know how Slovakia fare with Paraguay

I am well aware of the bribery issue in Korea...I had to deal with it a few times myself... Laughing

However, the whole Korea bribes the refs is silly which of course is what i was joking about. i thought that was rather clear with the way I wrote my previous post!

Now this WTP...what are you on my friend????:

Didn't you get kicked out of the country? I know that you messed things up so bad with the BMOE that you couldn't get a job there, Guilfoyle? Now, downtrodden and defeated, you seek restitution via the internet.

I commented on the BMOE thread to help the OP if I could. I was not kicked out of Korea, I left in 2008 for a vacation before taking up a new job in Seoul. Plans changed because I got hit by a drunk driver in Canada and spent the better part of 6 months in out of the hospital getting surgeries done. When the smoke cleared, I got an offer from the same public sector department but this time in Canada instead of in Seoul.

You seem to be confused... Laughing I hope that clears things up for ya.

Uruguay up 1-0 at halftime. You get the feeling they need to score one more or Korea is going to win it.

Uruguay is going to lose if they keep playing like this. Korea is really hot now.

2-1 full time. Anti-climatic after Saurez's second goal, but I'll take it.

Korea played well, not an embarrassing loss, and better than a lot of people expected I think. Decent WC for them.

Yeah, a good world cup for them, went out with their heads held high.

It's been oft mentioned this is their first time in the knockout stages outside of Korea but of more importance (and this also goes for Japan) it's their first significant sucess with a homegrown coach rather than a foreigner....a huge landmark for football in the region.
