I'm from Portland so not very manly according to a new survey (rank 50 out of 50 cities in manly-ness). Here's a link to the story in the Oregonian:

http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2010/06/portland_sinks_to_bottom_in_am.html

I enjoy reading the comments at the end of the story of all the people calling Portland a metro-sexual, tree hugging, bleeding heart, knee jerk liberal haven.

I'm not sure if there is a correlation between liberalism and girly men (Portland does have a flaming gay democratic mayor), but its funny none the less.

Here's a link to the rankings:

http://www.mars.com/global/news-and-media/press-releases/news-releases.aspx?SiteId=94&Id=2087

The top ten in manly-ness:

1. Charlotte, NC
2. Columbus, OH
3. Kansas City, MO
4. Nashville, TN
5. Baltimore, MD
6. Milwaukee, WI
7. Chicago, IL
8. Indianapolis, IN
9. Washington, DC
10. Philadelphia, PA

Guess I can't comment on this, since I'm a card carrying homosexual. I will say though, that I haven't missed that macho/manly b.s. for one second since I got here.

Looks like San Francisco is number 43. I'm from Columbus, Ohio. It's number 2, but has been called the San Francisco of the midwest. Gay Pride week is an enormous event that takes over the city.

I was planning on settling in Portland when I head back to the states. I just don't understand how a town with so many microbreweries could be anything but a total sausage fest. :/

I lived in Charlotte for a year. It's a center for banking, so I guess bankers are manly. Not sure what else about it is that special.

I really thought Philly would be in the top 5. My father's family is from that area so I go there to visit every so often and while it's not a glamourous city, it's got a lot of fatty food and hardcore sports fans. How is that not manly?

not to mention the most strip clubs per capita. perhaps it is its nickname, "the rose city." who knows, these are just BS ratings made by "writers" who can't come up with anything worthwhile
