Ever hear of Tim Donaghy? Look it up and ask any Sacramento Kings fan if the NBA is rigged.

Don't need to look that up. I don't think the NBA is rigged and I don't think the NFL or MLB or NHL are rigged either. There are always going to be people who complain that officiating was bad and that games were rigged. However, I will say that that game 6 to which you alluded is the only time in all my many years of watching sports when I did think the fix was in. That 4th quarter was ridiculous. As soon as Donaghy started hinting that officials were encouraged to make some series last longer, I thought about that game because it was pretty sad. But that's the only game I ever saw that seemed rigged. Others just seemed like typical home court advantage, a few bad calls here and there, or superstars getting calls.

I think the NBA finals is rigged. It ALWAYS goes to game 7. No matter how dominate a team is during the regular season, they can never with the NBA championship in just 4,5, or 6 games. It always has to go to game 7.

In my opinion, NBA finals game 1-6 is rigged. They know which team will win so that the NBA can milk the TV revenue and everything.

Wha???? This year was only like the 3rd time in the last 20 years that the finals went to game seven. There have been more sweeps during that period than game sevens.

The book The Fix, by Declan Hill, completely changed the way I think about football (and gave me some great reasons to hate FIFA). Here's an interview with him where he mentions fixing in the current World Cup. According to the book, match fixing is widespread, goes uninvestigated/unpunished, and FIFA does nothing to distance itself from the fixers.

Disgraceful.

Well, fixed or not, in the low-scoring game that is soccer, one bad call can make a huge difference, and there seem to be plenty of bad calls the past week. I haven't been watching most of the matches, but I start every day by reading sports web sites and there always seem to be a headline about a missed call: Lampart's goal that should have counted, the Argentinian' first goal was apparently way offside, and so on. There are more, but those two are just from one day.

Even some of the lowly ranked teams finish undefeated or level on points with the teams that got through.
new zealand - 78

don't forget the teams highly ranked that didn't qualify:
Croatia - 10
Russia - 11
Egypt - 12

and these are just a few I could have picked.

Rankings have nothing to do with it, we got out of the group stages in every world cup we played in.

perhaps you should let those who know about football to talk about it and you can go chat about netball or rounders or whatever it is you americans play somewhere else

I guess all these stats show there is hope for a country as sucky as Ireland in soccer. Better luck next time around. Cheers.

Maybe I'm thinking of the playoff games too. It just seems like to me that during NBA playoffs/finals I go to ESPN.com and on the front page is always something about "Game 7". Last year it was "Will it go to game 7". The year before that, "Can they make it to game 7". Even if the games didn't go to game 7, the headlines and sportswriters kept writing about Game 7 so maybe thats why "Game 7" is just stuck in my head.

I think 7 games isn't necessary in the NBA. NCAA basketball doesn't need 7 games to get their champion. For a low scorign sport like Baseball, soccer, or Hockey, I can see the merit of 7 games. For basketball, I don't see why.

Out of curiosity I looked into the storied history of football in Ireland. Are you kidding me dude! Ireland has been to 3 World Cups out of the 19 played. Your overall record is 2-8-3 while scoring a whopping 10 total goals. No wonder a handball got your knickers in a bunch. You were shooting for WC number 4!

You should be more proud of this:

Everybody is very defensive and uninspiring. Ultra low scoring games are the norm. Why? Because everybody is so evenly matched? Yeah right! The general MO for getting a goal is to get near or in the penalty area, fall down from a weak challenge to the ball, draw a foul or free kick from which you can score. That's not a sport.

My old man who was one of the most hardcore, ardent football fans you will ever meet has conceded it's all BS these days. He watches Australian Football now. When there's a close game in that, there's nothing better. And one more thing, when men fall over in pain, they really are hurt.

Why does everybody still watch the World Cup. A misguided, exaggerated sense of national pride or unwilling to not be seen as somebody who strays from the herd?

A little out of context, isn't it. There are 4 million people in the Republic of Ireland and soccer is not our number one sport*. We also have to qualify through the tough European qualifying section.

The USA qualifies through the North American qualifying section. It is inconceivable that they would miss a world cup. This is a fact. Same with South Korea. In ever World cup, Ireland has been to, we have made it out of the group. This would indicate that when we make it to a World Cup, we have an above average team by our standards. The US, Japan and Korea don't need a quality team to qualify. This year's Korea team was pretty good in my opinion, not so much in 2006 or 1998. However they will always qualify because everyone else in Asia bar Japan sucks. Same for the USA and Mexico.

Bear in mind, this is a good thing. The World cup is better when there are a variety of teams from around the world.

* If you are ever in Ireland, have a look at the Gaelic Football facilities wherever you are. In basically every town, the local GAA clubs have better facilities and more members. In the country, they have overwhelmingly better facilities and more members. The fact that Ireland has even been to a world cup or 2 is amazing.

Exactly what JMO said. The U.S have a good team but I don't think they would qualify very often if they were playing the the European qualification to enter it.

American love their stats, did you not realise the last time you posted crap stats on the rankings that they are no god when used out of context??

Your points are those of someone without any knowledge of football. Statistics show that we have only gotten to four world cups, but they don't show that most people in Ireland don't play soccer as a primary sport, we play Gaelic and Hurling and even rugby is getting up there now.

The investment in the sport is not great and what is invested in it is done very poorly. Every small village in Ireland has at least one gaelic team and even places that aren't villages have a team with most having very good facilities.

As for the video, what relevance has that got to do with anything? should I post a video of a typical fat ass american munching down on a hot dog, or a nice collection of pearl harbour videos or maybe one of the twin towers crumbling to the ground?? Nope.....why not??? cos I'm not a dck like that!!

Your play Gaelic alright. I didn't know hurling puke in the street after a bender was a sport in Ireland. Good job. I'm pretty sure most Irish dudes are good at pocket pool. I'm still looking for a stat on how many douchebag Irish guys it takes to play gaylic and then go hurling in a park. I'll get back to you.

Why don't you just go look for your lucky charms and quit making excuses for why your country sucks (boo hoo, we are poor). FAIL.

I thought this forum was for teachers not special needs students!

Look at me, I did a funny!! I said hurling was getting sick ha ha ha, then I said Gay-lick!!

You get 2 perfectly good responses, both of them try to inform you on a topic you clearly know nothing about and then you reply by making childish comments, those of which I haven't heard since ...well.....never, mostly cos I don't hang around with uneducated idiots!

I'm also guessing the 'Fail' at the end of your comment was placed there because you aren't used to submitting written work to a teacher without getting that reply!!

As for the 'poor' comment, isn't it America who has one of the highest debt ratios in the world. You have people in certain parts of your country living as if they are in a 3rd world country too. but hey, I'm not here to offend America, it's not Americans that are the problem....it's you!

When you are finished being a dck and are ready to have a grown up converstation with the rest of the adults in the forum perhaps you might want to come back in.
