I can't get Korean fonts to display properly. It shows up as garbage. I downloaded the Font files, and had VLC point to that Korean fonts and it still doesn't work.
I've tried multiple Korean fonts.
I have Korean font/text enabled in my language settings. I can type Korean,, see Korean everywhere else. Only in VLC, GNOME Mplayer is where Korean comes up as garbage. |

VLC has problems running Korean subtitles on a Korean Windows. I believe the problem may be with VLC and not with what you are doing.
I had to rig up Gom Player to read Korean subtitles. |

Can I get Gomplayer to run in Linux? Maybe via Wine? |

I don't think there is a native Linux version, but it would most likely run under Wine without much of a problem. You will have to install Korean fonts in Wine though. I don't use Ubuntu, I use another Linux distro.
I can't exactly point you in the right direction but I would install Wine, and maybe Winetricks if it's available on Ubuntu. This may help you with Korean fonts in Wine.

It's pretty old though, there are probably easier ways to do it nowadays. |

looks like we're all showing movies right?
had the same issue last week. you can install the language packs using language support under the administration tab.
you'll have to install all the korean packs but vlc works with subs (just used it.) |

Try SMplayer, or Gnome Movie Player - they both display Korean files, but you need to change the encoding option and maybe the system font too. Also, convert .smi subs to .srt, because I had some problems getting smi files to work in ubuntu. |

in vlc you not only have to change the setting to use a korean subtitle file, but you also need to change the default encoding. it's different in every os, but try EUC-KR or CP949 if they are in the drop down menu. |
