Are there any textbooks that can be used for teaching essay writing, particularly one that focusses on grammar and syntactical structure, for advanced students at high school? |

- Writing to Learn: From Paragraph to Essay or The Essay, by Lou and Marilynn Spaventa - McGraw Hill
Grammar and writing, Overall these books get the job done but they aren't really all that inspired.
- Ready to Write and Ready to Write More, by Karen Blanchard, Pearson Longman
I haven't had the chance to use these books yet, but I like the look of them. They seem far more practical and student friendly than other books.
- Effective Academic Writing 2: The Short Essay, Aliice Savage, Patricia Mayer, Oxford
This series focuses more on academic writing so it runs through the different essay types. Not a bad book but it doesn't focus on grammar as much as some of the other books. Better for more advanced students...or use a lower book in their series.
- New Directions; Reading, writing, and critical thinking, Peter S. Gardner, Cambridge
The most professional book of the lot. Cambridge has three books, this one is the most advanced. Top notch writing for serious writers. Involves vocabulary, discussion and writing assignments...not really a grammar book.
- Great Writing 4: Great Essays, Keith S. Folse, Heinle Cengage Learning
Really nice book, well laid out, looks great and has great exercises. You can also get level 3 which focuses on the paragraph to essay. Not very strong in grammar though.

I taught "Essay Writing for beginners" book 1 and it was pretty good, complete with a cd. It clearly shows the proper format to write an essay and they even get practice taking notes when listening to a lecture, etc. Quite useful. It's written by Kelli Ripatti and Lucy Han and is focused in association with the TOEFL IBT. |
